FIELDWORK # 2

Title: DISTANCE BY PACING

Objective:
To measure distances by using one’s pace factor. This is an individual activity.

Introduction:

Once one’s pace factor is established approximate measurement of distances can now be
done. This method is very useful when no instrument is readily available or when reconnaissance
survey is to be conducted.

Instruments:

1 Steel tape
Marking Pins / Marker
2 Range Poles

Site: BPSU-Main Grounds

Procedure:

1. Know the place/area assigned to you.

2. Measure the distance by taping.
3. Starting from one end, walk in your normal step up to the other end.
4. Take note of the total number of steps you make.
5. Make at least two trials.
6. To get the actual distance, simply multiply the total number of steps with your pace factor.
7. Sketch the actual distance you paced.
8. List down all the problems you encountered/observed in performing this activity.

FORMULA:

Paced distance = Total no. of paces x Pace Factor

| Distance by taping−Mean distance by pacing |

Relative Precision =
