Laboratory Activity No. 2

Distance Measurement: Taping

Introduction: (Create your own introduction)

Materials/Equipment Required:

 Fiber Tape/ Surveying Tape

 Plumb bob
 Stakes/Markers
 Spring Balance
 Notebook
 Pencil
 Calculator

Procedures:
1. Locate the points to be measured.
2. Set up the tape at point A, use plumb bob to make sure that the tape held vertically.
3. Stretched the tape between the two points to be measured and ensure that the tape is
properly leveled, use spring balance to make sure that the pull exerted are uniform in
every measurement.
4. Measure the temperature of the surrounding during measurement of distance.
5. Compute the correction factor for temperature using the formula discussed during
lecture.
7. Compute the correction factor for sag using the formula discussed during lecture.
8. Compute the correction factor for tension using the formula discussed during lecture.
9. Use assumptions for the coefficient of linear expansion and modulus of elasticity found
in the internet using the material of the tape.
9. Use standard temperature and tension based on the tapes specification.
10. Add the correction factors for temperature, sag, and tension to the measured distance to
obtain the corrected distance.
11. Repeat the measurement at least 3 more times and compute the mean of the corrected
distances.
12. Record the corrected distance and any observations.

Sketches, Tabulation of Data and Calculation:

Guide Questions:
 What is the purpose of measuring distances by taping in engineering surveying?
 How do we compute the correction factors for temperature, sag, and tension?
 How do we apply the correction factors to the measured distance to obtain the corrected
distance?
 What are the main sources of error in our measurements?
 What are the real-life applications of distance measurement by taping in engineering
surveying?
