4th shift scenario – cutting area

Hugo López 08.07.2020

4th shift proposal

Explanation:

➢ The 4th shift proposal is used when we would like to use 100% of capacity installed of
machine(s), that is the 21 shifts available of the week, that is an additional 23% of
available capacity

➢ The concept is to have 4 groups of people, working 12 x 12 shifts, in a 4x3 and 4x4
configuration, rotating as follows: Every month in days, every 2 weeks in day / night

➢ Every month, 1 day must be a rest day, in order to make the rotation between groups
smooth and not to overburden people, and to do a full maintenance to increase
equipment reliability

➢ The overall working hours in total per person is 42 hrs, (12 x 3 + 12 x 4) / 2

Benefits:

➢ Overtime is eliminated completely

➢ People is more willing to work like this since they will have 3 and 4 resting days
respectively

➢ 100% machine utilization, added capacity 23%

➢ Time to do a full maintenance once per month, to maintain optimum equipment

utilization. Another possibility is to stop 1 machine per shift, during 1 week, so that
reliability of equipment is always achieved
