Good evening, Class!

So everybody stand and let us pray. In the name of the father, the son the holy spirit…..Amen

Before you take your seat please arrange your seats and pick up the pieces of paper under your
chair. Are you done? Okay you may now take your seat.

But before we start, I am going to check the attendance first. Once I call your name, you
are going to say Darna. Okay?

Very good! Today I am going to play a video first because it seems like you are tired and sleepy.
Right? So to give you energy, you will be doing what is in the video okay?
(Done)

That’s great! I think you are now alive, alert, awake and enthusiastic. So today we are
going to have a recap first of what we discussed last meeting. So as you can see, there are
pictures here and you are going to tell if it is a solid, liquid, or gas.

Good job! So let us know what will be our learning objectives for today that we hope to meet at
the end of our lesson. Can anyone read the first objective? (until 3rd objective)

Okay. Thank you very much. To begin with, do you think that materials found in the community
possess different properties? Yes.

Very good! There are different materials found in the community and each material possesses
different properties.Everything you see, feel, and touch are matter. Matter exists in different
forms; solid, liquid, and gas. Matter aside from its phases can also be classified according to its
properties.

One of these is its ability to Absorb water.

Materials can be classified based on their ability to absorb water. But, what does absorb mean?
Absorb means to take in something like a liquid in a natural way. Ibig sabihin, Ito yung
unti-unti. But some materials can absorb water, and others do not.

Can you give me an example of materials that Absorb water?

Very good! All materials that you have mentioned truly absorb water.Materials that absorb water
are also called Porous Materials. What is porous material? Can you please read the two
bullets?

Let us observe this one. Do you think that this sponge has small
holes and does it absorb water? Yes or no? Let’s see.
What will happen to the sponge when we soak it in water? Bumigat ba sya? Naabsorb nya ba
ang tubig? So this sponge has small holes. These holes will absorb water and thus make
the sponge heavy. When we squeeze or hold the sponge tightly it will drip droplets of
water. Do you now understand materials that absorb water?

Let us have another example when you are in the swimming pool, you wear a swimsuit, or rash
guard. What have you observed when you removed and squeezed your swimsuit or rash
guard? May lumalabas na tubig galing sa iyong swimwear. Bakit kaya? Because your
swimwear is made of Cloth. And cloth or fabric is an example of absorbent material. It
can be made into hand towels, handkerchiefs, and rags.

Okay, so like what i have mentioned earlier. Some materials can absorb water and others do
not. Let us observe these pictures. The first picture…. The second picture… What have
you observed?

What is the cup made of? The cup is made of plastic, it doesn’t have a tiny hole and does not
absorb water. This material is called non-porous. Can anyone read? Okay. Nonporous
materials do not allow air or water to pass through.

Can you give me an example of materials that do not absorb water?

Right!

To check your understanding. Let’s try this. Tell whether the materials are porous or
non-porous by checking the corresponding column.

ASIDE FROM THE ABILITY TO ABSORB WATER, THE MATERIALS ALSO CAN BE
CLASSIFIED BASED ON THEIR ABILITY TO FLOAT AND SINK.

Materials have their own ability to behave on water. Some materials stay on top of the water
and some materials fall to the bottom of water. And therefore, the weight of an object affects
its ability to float and sink in water.

What do we mean by float and sink? Can anyone read this one? Okay thank you. Kapag
At kapag

So let us take a look at this.

What will happen if I put these duck toy and peso coins in the water? Any guesses?
When you put the duck toy in water, it stays on top. And when you put these peso coins in the
water, it falls to the bottom.
Let us also take a look at this another example.
What will happen if I put this bottle cap and stones in the water? Do you think one of them will
float and sink? Which one will float?

What does this imply? It talks about density. Let’s read this altogether. Density is a
measure of how heavy something is compared to its size. If an object is more
dense than water it will sink when placed in water, and if it is less dense than
water it will float.

(Basahon ang about sa glass, stone and metal)

(Basahon si question) Yes, it is true because as the material absorbs water or takes
in water through holes it gets heavy and sinks eventually. An example of these
are materials like sponges, cotton balls, and cloth that need to absorb water
before it sinks.

Naiintindihan ba?

To check your understanding, let’s try this activity. You are going to Look at the picture
then identify whether it will float or sink on water by filling in the blanks.

Aside from classifying materials based on its ability to float and sink, we can also
classify material based on their ability to undergo decay. decay. There are things that
will die and decay and others will not. Those things that do not decay can be
recycled and those that do, enrich the earth.

What is Decay?
Decaying materials are also
called Biodegradable or bio-waste. What is it? Can anyone read?

[2nd bullet] So decaying materials become organic fertilizers that enrich the soil. Like
for example, banana peelings and vegetables ay pepwedeng ilagay sa lupa para ito ay
maging organic fertilizer.

LET US OBSERVE THE FIGURE 1 AND 2.

The first bread shows that it is safe to eat while the second one is not because it
changes color. WIth that in mind, Mold is an indication that the material is starting
to undergo decay. Mapapansin nyo may mga ibang material especially yung mga
pagkain, kapag nakita nyo na nagmold na sila or inaamag na, isa na iyong indikasyon
na ito ay nagsisimula ng mabulok.

Another sign that the material undergoes decaying is when it has a bad smell.

BUT LET US ALL REMEMBER THAT NOT ALL PLANTS AND ANIMALS DECAY AT
THE SAME TIME. THERE ARE SOME DECAYING MATERIALS THAT TAKE
LONGER TIME TO DECAY THAN THE OTHER.

MAYROONG MATAGAL, MAY MABILIS NA NABUBULOK NA PLANTS AND

ANIMALS.

To check your understanding, let’s try this.

Let us now have our assessment. Get one and pass.

(Checking)

It is important to know the ability of materials to absorb water because that will help
us decide what materials to use. There are different household chores for which we use
materials that absorb water. Absorbing materials are also used in cleaning and treating
our wounds and cleaning our bodies during baths.

It is also important to know the ability of materials to float and sink because some
kids your age or younger don’t know how to swim. Using materials that keep you afloat
can help save you when you are in the water in case of an emergency.

Lastly, decay seems like an unpleasant process because things that are decaying
or rotting usually don’t look or smell nice, but decay is absolutely essential to the
balance of the world. Life as we know it would not exist without growth and decay.
Those things that do not decay can be recycled and those that do, enrich the earth.
