7.1 PRINCIPLE OF DESIGN

1. Harmony
It is achieved by establishing a pleasing relationship between the
various elements. There is harmony if the various parts of a design will give
an appearance of belonging together.

2. Balance (Informal and Formal)

Is also known as Symmetrical Balance. It is achieved by making both
sides exactly alike. Objects of the same size and shape, when arranged on
two sides of a center, will produce formal balance.

Types of Balance
 Symmetrical Balance
 also called Formal Balance
 Bilateral Symmetry
 Asymmetrical Balance
 also called Informal Balance
 Approximate Symmetry
 Radial Symmetry

3. Proportion
It is determined by a comparison of the sizes of different parts of an
object or of an arrangement. Harmonious proportion is achieved when one
part of an object does not seem too big or too small for the other parts.

4. Rhythm
It is achieved by the regular or harmonious recurrence of lines, forms
and colors. It is an organized movement, a repetition.

Types of Rhythm
• Linear Rhythm
• Repetition
• Alternation
• Gradation

5. Emphasis
It is produced by the design or form that catches our attention while the
rest are subordinated. Likewise, it is emphasizing one feature in an art so it
will stand out from the rest.
