ART APPRECIATION/HUMS 1201

(MODULE 1)
LESSON 4 ASSESSMENT

Application and Assessment:

A. Answer the following questions. (10 points each)

1. Why should objects in drawings and paintings be balanced?

Artist generally strive to create artwork that is balanced. A balanced work, in

which the visual weight is distributed evenly across the composition, seems stable,
makes the viewer feel comfortable, and pleasing to the eye. A work that is unbalanced
appears unstable, creates tension, and makes the viewer uneasy.

2. Is there rhythm without repetition? If yes, why? If no, why not?

Yes, because you can create an abstract pattern that does not repeat. That said,
the human perception will look for a rhythm if it is all close, a process called quantifying.
So, the human brain, with or without musical training, will look for patterns in music, to
make sense of it.

3. Among the art principles, which one would you consider as the most
important? Why?
Line is the most important elements of art. Imagine creating a painting, sculpture
or design without drawing lines to divide the paper or canvas into shapes and forms.
Lines can communicate an idea or express a feeling.
4. What is the significance of variety in art?
Variety is the principle of art that adds interest to an artwork. Variety works
through just a position and contrast. When an artist places different visual
element next to one another, he/she is using variety. Principles of art bleed into
one another.

5. Why do people view an object differently?

People perceive things differently. We choose to select different aspects of a
message to focus our attention based on what interests us, what is familiar to us, or
what we consider important. Often, our listening skills could use improvement.

B. True or False (2 pts each)

Write TRUE if the statement is correct. Write FALSE if it is incorrect.

TRUE 1. Objects which have decorations are better emphasized than those without
them.
TRUE 2. The most essential factor in emphasis is simplicity.
