I. TITLE: LIQUID LIMIT TEST
II. OBJECTIVE
• to prepare soil specimen as per specification
• to find the relationship between water content and number of blows
• to graph a flow curve
• to find out liquid limit
III. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENTS
• Casagrande’s Apparatus
• soil
• balance
• grooving tool
• mixing dishes
• oven
• sieve no. 40
• spatula
IV. PROCEDURE
1. Provide the soil sample that passed through sieve no. 40 from the previous laboratory.
Have at least 300 g of the said soil sample in a mixing bowl.
2. Add water in mixed the soil until it becomes a paste and appears uniform in
consistency.
3. Weigh and record all the cans to be used later in getting samples from each test.
4. Calibrate the device using the end of the grooving tool to ensure a consistent drop of
the cup before the tests.
5. Thoroughly clean the cup and put a levelled sample of the mixed soil of 8 mm in
depth.
6. Create a groove in the centre of the soil with the grooving tool.
7. Turn the device at 120 revolutions per minute or 2 revolutions per second and count
the blows it takes to close the groove on the soil. If the number of blows falls between
15-20, scoop out some of the soil and put it on one of the pre weighed cans and record
the new weight.
8. Repeat the process for blows 20 to 25, 25 to 30 and 30 to 35, adjusting the dryness or
wetness of the soil sample.
9. Place all the samples in the oven for drying and record again the weight of each
sample after drying.
