TEXTS
Young people love learning, but they like learning even more if they are presented with information
in an interesting and challenging way.
Many classrooms now use a whiteboard as a computer screen. As a consequence, teachers can show
websites on the board in front of the class. Teachers can then use the Internet to show educational
programmes, play educational games, music, recordings of languages, and so on.
In some countries, tablet computers are available for students to use in class. Therefore, students
can use the tablets to do tasks such as showing photographs, researching information, recording
interviews and creating diagrams. Tablets are ideal for pair and group work.
Teachers can perhaps ask their students to start writing a blog, either about their own lives or as if
they were someone famous. They can also create a website for the classroom. Students can
contribute to the website, so for example they can post work, photos and messages.
We all like to send emails, don't we? Email exchanges are very useful in the classroom. Teachers
can ask students to email what they have learnt to students of a similar age to another school. They
could even email students in another country.
Another way of communicating with other schools is through talking to people over the computer.
Most computers have cameras, so you can also see the people you are talking to. In this way,
students who are studying English in Jordan can see what students in England are doing in
classroom while they are speaking to them. You can also use this system to invite guest speakers to
give talks over a computer. For example, scientists or teachers from another country could give a
lesson to the class. If you had this type of lesson, the students would be very excited.
Students often use computers at home if they have them. Students can use social media on their
computers to help them with their studies, including asking other students to check and compare
their work, asking questions and sharing ideas. The teacher must be part of the group, too, to
monitor what is happening.

Everyone knows that the Internet connects people, but now it does more than that – it connects
objects, too. These days, computers often communicate with each other; for example, your TV
automatically downloads your favourite TV show, or your ‘sat nav’ system tells you where you
are. This is known as the ‘Internet of Things’, and there’s a lot more to come.
In just a few years’ time, experts say that billions of machines will be connected to each other and
to the Internet. As a consequence, computers will increasingly run our lives for us. For example,
your fridge will know when you need more milk and add it to your online shopping list; your
windows will close if it is likely to rain; your watch will record your heart rate and email your
doctor; and your sofa will tell you when you need to stand up and get some exercise!
Many people are excited about the ‘Internet of Things’. For them, a dream is coming true. They
say that our lives will be easier and more comfortable. However, others are not so sure. They want
to keep control of their own lives and their own things. In addition, they wonder what would
happen if criminals managed to access their passwords and security settings. The dream could
easily become a nightmare!

a. People
b. Objects
2. There are two characteristics for life when using the Internet of things. Mention them.

life. However, people should control their lives and their own things.
Studio schools are pioneering schools which receive funding as well as support from private
businesses. They seek to encourage young people to undertake a less conventional form of
secondary education. These schools often specialise in one specific area, whilst understanding that
the same broad range of skills and qualifications should be made available to all young people.
One such school has recently opened to educate fourteen- to eighteen-year-olds who have a
special interest in working in the space industry. Students follow a tailor-made curriculum at the
school, including subjects such as Astronomy and Astrophysics. Lessons are a mixture of small-
class tutorials, with projects supervised by leading companies in both the space and technology
industries.
Prominent scientists and engineers are brought in as guest lecturers, with students aiming to
achieve top grades in their Maths and Science exams. When they leave school, they will be well-
placed to take any number of different career paths. ‘They don’t have to become astronauts!’ says
a spokesperson for the school. ‘Excellent grades in science and technology subjects can open
many doors and lead to a variety of career opportunities.’
2. Studio schools teach many subjects related to Space. Mention two of these special subjects.

people.
C: Do you know whether it's best to get up early, or to revise late at night?
The earlier you start in the morning, the more beneficial your revision will be, because that's when
you feel most awake and your memory is at its best. I'd also recommend studying for 30-minute
periods, and then taking a break. It's been proved that concentration starts to decrease after half an
hour, so frequent breaks will help the brain to recover and concentration to return.
1. The writer recommends starting early in the morning. Mention the benefits of waking up
early to revise.
a. You feel most awake
b. Your memory is at its best.

5. Find a phrase from the above text which means “write a schedule”.
Draw up a timetable.
You’re selling a new type of toothpaste to a chain of pharmacies, the latest computer software
to a school or a new kind of package holiday to a travel agency – you need to know …
1. Do your research
Don't come away from a sales pitch wishing you had been better prepared. It is essential to
know everything about your product. Do you know when it was developed, and where it is
produced? You also need to know who the target market is – for example, the age group or
income of the people who might buy it. Not only that, you should know all about the
competition – that is, similar products on the market. Why is your product superior to others
and why does it have better value? In addition, you should know exactly which people you
are speaking to, and what their needs are. For example, if they represent a middle-class
department store in a humble neighbourhood, be ready to explain why your particular product
would suit customers who do not have lots of money. What makes your product perfect for
them? Most of all, you need to believe in what you’re selling, and the best way to do that is to
use it!
3. Be professional
Keep your presentation short and simple. Start with some friendly comments. For example,
thank your hosts for allowing you to speak to them, and compliment their company.
Remember to speak slowly and clearly. It is important to appear confident (even if you’re
nervous!). While you’re speaking, don’t keep your head down. Instead, look round the room
and make eye contact with your audience. Smile! When you’ve finished speaking, invite
questions. If you don’t know the answers, don’t pretend! Thank the questioner and promise to
find out the answer (and do it!). Finally, have a summary of your presentation ready to hand
out at the end of the session. I wish I had known all this when I started out in business! Good
luck!

it!

1. Consider the idea of transport. Compare the train and the elephant. What are the advantages
and disadvantages of each mode of transport mentioned, and how does this relate to the rest
of the extract?
Transport is an important theme in this story. As it describes a train’s unfinished route and
an elephant’s potential to be a good mode of transport which is needed to continue the
journey. The elephant, a live animal, is described as a mode of transport while the man-
made transport fails. The elephant seems to be a more positive investment.

Write an article about a health problem (obesity), its causes, its side effects. Then
write some advice and solution to those who suffer from such a problem.
Obesity
In many countries, an increasing number of young people and adults are overweight or
even obese. One reason for this is fast food. Another big factor is lack of exercise. People
used to walk to school or work, but these days many more of us drive. Modern technology
has also played its part; we spend more and more time focusing on computer screens.
Health experts have been warning about the dangers of obesity. They think that obesity
can lead to various health issues. Obesity is a situation where a person faces a continuous
increase in body mass. This increase is usually not normal and hence is a cause of
concern. The diseases linked to obesity range from blood pressure, heart issues,
hypertension, and diabetes as well.
Experts recommend a mixture of solutions such as adapting to healthy food habits and
daily exercising can reduce weight. The best way to keep the self and family away from
obesity is to have a healthy lifestyle.

Write an essay about the importance of learning foreign languages and its effects on
living and communicating with other cultures.
In today’s advanced world, if you are proficient in more than one language it helps you
communicate with the world in a more meaningful way.
Not only you can communicate better with a greater number of people but it can also help
you with your career. Here are some advantages of learning a foreign language.
One of the most remarkable benefits of learning a foreign language is opening new doors
of opportunities and meeting new people.
You can connect with people from a wide range of communities and can develop lifelong
connections.
You will realize how people become comfortable when you communicate with them using
their mother tongue.
As you learn a foreign language and become open to a new culture, you also become more
receptive and appreciative of others’ thoughts and actions.
Write a letter to your friend about a terrible experience that you had passed by in
the past telling him / her about your feelings and what lessons you had learned.
Dear friend,
Thank you very much for your letter. It was great to hear from you today. I hope you’re
doing well.
I had a terrible experience last winter which was unforgettable. It was a very cold morning
as it had been raining very heavily the previous night. As my father was busy, my brother
volunteered to drive me to school. The road was already congested with traffic. It
appeared that everyone was late as well.
My brother was a careful driver and he refused to drive fast on the slippery road. A few
hundred meters away from the school, we witnessed a tragic accident. It all happened very
quickly, as most accidents do.
A car full of school children had made a left turning without signaling and as a result a
school bus crashed into it. A few cars behind the school bus rammed into the bus as they
could not brake in time.
The scene was something I would never forget; three school children were out of the car.
The driver lay lifeless on the steering wheel. I rushed to the children, two of them were
23
seriously hurt and bleeding from the head and hands. One of them appeared unconscious.
I think he was killed on the spot. In the meantime, passers-by had called the ambulance
and while waiting we tried as best as possible to help the victims. The passengers in the
school bus were injured, too.
Meanwhile, two ambulances had arrived. A traffic police car was there too. Two policemen
were taking down statements from eye-witnesses. The injured and the dead were taken away
to the hospital.
I felt that it could have been prevented if the drivers had been more careful. Innocent lives
would not have been lost otherwise.
Write an article about the differences between vocational and academic education
regarding advantages and reducing unemployment.
People have become aware of the vocational education as the job market requires trained and
skilled workers in certain jobs. On the other hand, academic education is not required as it was
before.
It is better for young people to join vocational schools and colleges in order to become productive
in their communities. As you know well, the rates of unemployment in our country are higher
than usual because the students usually enroll in academic courses. When they graduate, they
don’t find jobs. The job market needs electricians, barbers, plumbers, graphic designers,
carpenters, blacksmiths and etc.
At the end, before enrolling in any university or school, the student should consult experts who
specialize in the job markets to get feedback which major is wanted and which one is absorbed.
Therefore, students have the opportunity to get a rewarding job instead of wasting years for
nothing.
