Coronavirus Influence on Education


As part of the effort to contain the spread of the coronavirus, public spaces such as schools, universities, and
offices are closing down so that people can stay at home and prevent further spread.

In countries, such as China, where testing and quarantine measures were taken, the spread was able to level
out. Measures that are taken to slow the rate of infection include social distancing, limits on event sizes, and
home quarantine when necessary.

Closing schools and offices ensures that people can limit their interactions with others and slows the spread of
the virus while the healthcare system copes with the pandemic.
Many schools and universities are opting to continue their normal classes on online platforms. This includes
the use of online tools, such as group video programs, that allow teachers and students to meet and conduct
classes over the internet.

Another way that students are continuing their studies is through distance learning, which uses online
programs that replace instructors with educational material that students study on their own.

An example of distance learning would be online classes or videos which students use on their own time, as
opposed to meeting live with the teacher and other students.
However, not all schools and universities were able to make it online and may soon be closed forever.

With young children at home from school and their normal schedules disrupted, parents are needing to make
schedules for children who would normally be in school. Even with online classes, parents need to help
younger children navigate school on the computer, and parents with kindergarten children are unable to work
unless other arrangements can be made.
As school and university staff learn how to convert their lessons to online platforms, both students and staff are
learning how to deal with remote learning and communication.

Though technology has already had a big hand in most school affairs, the new dependence on technology for
every aspect of education is forced to occur overnight — leaving many people struggling with technological
difficulties, as well as coping with the challenges of studying at home and learning how to construct a
productive schedule outside of the school environment.
Despite the above challenges, the shift in education also means that more opportunities are arising and
becoming available to students. An emphasis is being put on online and distance education — making
affordable programs more relevant and known to the public.

Students who are currently making the switch from face to face classes to online classes may find that a
remote education actually works well for them, and may choose to take further education or degrees online.

This switch is an opportunity for many students to try out remote education, and may make it more likely that
they will engage with online classes in the future. Students being newly introduced to remote education may
opt for taking a future degree online, due to the benefits of distance learning and the affordable options
available.
With efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, education is suddenly and rapidly moving online.
New educational opportunities are being advertised and made available for students, but the switch has also
pointed to the importance of the public school systems for lower-income families, and the challenges the switch
presents for families, special needs students, as well as staff and students across the board.

It may be too early to say how students and teachers will cope with online learning as they figure out the kinks,
but the impact of the coronavirus on education is an important consideration.

What’s been seen so far is that remote learning comes with many challenges, but the switch to technological
platforms also gives new opportunities to students and teachers to try out different modes of education.

It’s possible that once the COVID-19 pandemic settles down, we may see a continued increase in education
systems using online platforms for study aids, as well as students embracing online education for their higher
learning degree programs.

Task 5: Key Concepts

Expository writing imparts information, shares ideas and provides explanations and evidence. Some examples
of expository works include magazine and newspaper articles, textbooks , autobiographies and persuasive
college essays.

Expository text exposes you to facts: plain and simple. In this lesson, you will learn how to understand and
identify expository text. You will be able to distinguish between expository and narrative text and understand
why this distinction is important.

What Are the Types of Exposition and What Are They Used For?

Exposition is used to inform, explain, describe or define subject matter. Expository writing can be found in
educational publications, atlases and guides, biographical novels, newspapers and more. Certain types of
expository texts are more appropriate for publication in scientific journals and textbooks than newspapers and
magazines.

Expository texts may be categorized by one or more of the following types:


• Compare and Contrast
• Problem and Solution
• Cause and Effect
• Process
• Definition

Let’s take a look at them one by one.

Compare And Contrast Essay


The compare and contrast essay is a type of essay in which the writer compares and contrasts two things. The
writer compares the similarities between the two selected subjects and contrasts the differences in those
subjects. The subjects should belong to the same category.

For example;
Compare and contrast two oranges or two apples, rather than comparing and contrasting an apple with an
orange. You can compare and contrast the color of apples, the shape, the size, etc. You cannot compare the
color of an apple with an orange. It doesn’t make sense as they don’t belong to the same category.

Cause And Effect Essay


In the cause and effect essay, the writer tries to find the cause of something; why did something happen? and
what effects it might have. This type of essay has built around the reason that caused something to happen
and its possible impacts.

There are two ways to structure a cause and effect essay:


• Block structure
• Chain structure

In the block structure, all the causes are presented first and then all of its effects. Whereas, in the chain
structure, each of the causes is followed by its effect straight away. It could be based upon assumptions or
could be based on facts, but either way, they should be validated.
Problem Solution Essay
In the problem solution essay, the writer identifies a problem and then proposes its solution. The writer
examines the particular subject from various aspects and perspectives prior to providing a solution. This essay
is somewhat similar to the cause and effect essay.

For example;
You choose to write about the coronavirus. You’ll examine the problem thoroughly i.e. how the virus came into
existence? How is it spreading, What problems has it caused for society? etc.
After examining the problem, you’ll suggest its possible solutions; how to overcome this situation? What
precautionary measures do we need to take to protect ourselves from the virus? etc.

Process Essay
The process essay refers to the process of something i.e. how to make an apple pie. This type of writing
includes a step by step process of making or doing something.

For example;
You are writing about how to bake a cake. You’ll provide the complete recipe in a proper sequence i.e.
1. Preheat the oven for half an hour at 180 degree
2. Mix the baking powder, cocoa powder, flour, and sugar
3. Beat the eggs
4. Add the beaten eggs into the mixture
5. Melt the butter and chocolate and add them into the mixture
6. Pour the batter into the pan and bake

This is how you write a process essay, it provides the complete process of doing something. The goal is to
provide the process in such a way that the reader can follow the sequence without any mistake.

Definition Essay
The definition essay is a type of expository essay that gives a complete description of the topic. It explains
what the term or the topic of the essay exactly means. Some terms have concrete meanings like glass, book,
etc. Whereas some have abstract meanings like love, respect, honor, etc.
The definition essay revolves around explaining the purpose, what, why, and how aspect of the topic of the
essay. This essay could start with the dictionary definition and ultimately provide the extended definition.

Tips for Expository Writing

As you write, keep in mind some of these tips for creating an effective expository essay:

Start where you know the information best. You don't have to write your introduction first. In fact, it might be
easier to wait until the end for that. If you don't like the look of a blank page, move over the slugs from your
outline for the main body paragraphs and write the topic sentences for each. Then start putting in your
information according to each paragraph's topic.

Be clear and concise. Readers have a limited attention span. Make your case succinctly in language that the
average reader can understand.

Stick to the facts. Although an exposition can be persuasive, it should not be based on opinion only. Support
your case with facts, data, and reputable sources that can be documented and verified.

Consider voice and tone. How you address the reader depends on the kind of essay you're writing. An essay
written in the first person is fine for a personal travel essay but is inappropriate if you're a business reporter
describing a patent lawsuit. Think about your audience before you begin writing.

Planning Your Essay


1. Brainstorm: Jot down ideas on a blank piece of paper. Connect them with arrows and lines, or just
make lists. Rigor doesn't matter at this stage. Bad ideas don't matter at this stage. Just write down
ideas, and the engine in your head will lead you to a good one. When you've got that idea, then repeat
the brainstorming exercise with ideas that you want to pursue on that topic and information you could
put in. From this list, you'll start to see a path emerge for your research or narrative to follow.
2. Compose your thesis: When your ideas coalesce into a sentence in which you can summarize the topic
you're writing about, you're ready to compose your thesis sentence. Write down in one sentence the
main idea that you'll explore in your paper.

3. Examine your thesis: Is it clear? Does it contain opinion? If so, revise that out. For this type of essay,
you stick to the facts and evidence. This isn't an editorial. Is the thesis' scope manageable? You don't
want your topic too narrow or too broad to be covered in the amount of space you have for your paper.
If it's not a manageable topic, refine it. Don't be dismayed if you have to come back and tweak it if your
research finds that your initial idea was off-kilter. It's all just part of the process of focusing the material.

4. Outline: It may seem inconsequential, but making even a quick outline can save you time by organizing
your areas of pursuit and narrowing them down. When you see your topics in an organized list, you
may be able to discard off-topic threads before you research them—or as you're researching them and
you find they just don't work.

5. Research: Find your data and sources to back up the areas you want to pursue to support your thesis
statement. Look for sources written by experts, including organizations, and watch for bias. Possible
sources include statistics, definitions, charts and graphs, and expert quotes and anecdotes. Compile
descriptive details and comparisons to make your topic clear to your reader, when applicable.

How to Format an Expository Essay

Paragraph 1: The Introduction

Conclusion (Reiterates the thesis statement)

An expository essay has three basic parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. Each is crucial to
writing a clear article or effective argument.

The introduction: The first paragraph is where you'll lay the foundation for your essay and give the reader an
overview of your thesis. Use your opening sentence to get the reader's attention, and then follow up with a few
sentences that give your reader some context for the information you're about to cover.

The body: At a minimum, include three to five paragraphs in the body of your expository essay. The body could
be considerably longer, depending on your topic and audience. Each paragraph begins with a topic sentence
where you state your case or objective. Each topic sentence supports your overall thesis statement. Then,
each paragraph includes several sentences that expand on the information and/or support the topic sentence.
Finally, a concluding sentence offers a transition to the following paragraph in the essay.

The conclusion: The final section of your expository essay should give the reader a concise overview of your
thesis. The intent is not merely to summarize your argument but to use it as a means of proposing further
action, offering a solution, or posing new questions to explore. Don't cover new material related to your thesis,
though. This is where you wrap it all up.

Identify the following expository type of essay. Write CE if it is Cause and Effect, PS for Problem Solution, CC
for Compare and Contrast, P for Process and D for Definition. Prove your answer on the spaces below.

1. Many people think that the rules for polite behavior are the same everywhere. They may not realize that
how you define politeness depends upon the culture that you grow up in.
For example, countries have different customs for offering and receiving food and drinks. In Latin America,
offering food or drink to all visitors is very important. If a visitor does not accept the food, it is considered rude,
unless there is a health reason. In the United States, on the other hand, it is appropriate for a guest to say “no”
if he or she doesn’t want anything. Many hosts accept this refusal and are not offended by it.
Politeness is also expressed by the way people speak to each other. Some cultures are more open and
friendly; others are more reserved. For example, in the United States, it is common for strangers to strike up a
conversation. They may start talking on the bus, at a subway station, or in a supermarket. On the other hand,
in the United Kingdom, it is less common for strangers to talk. Many British people are more reserved than
Americans, so talking to strangers is not always considered polite.
Different customs can also be seen at restaurants. In the United States, for example, people say “Excuse me”
to call to a waiter or waitress. They do not snap their fingers because they think it is rude. In some cultures, in
contrast, people gesture with their hands or snap their fingers. Unlike in the United States, it is appropriate in
those countries, and the server will not be offended.
Politeness is based on a desire to treat other people well, but countries show politeness in different ways. Each
culture has its own customs and expectations. If we understand this, we are less likely to be offended by
customs that are different from our own.

2. Pollution is one of the main reasons why global warming is increasing. Pollution comes from natural
and man-made sources such motor vehicles, littering, and businesses like construction, mining, and
agriculture. Pollution effects the environment and habitats of living things.
Motor vehicle pollution is one of the leading causes for pollution. The fumes that vehicles create are increasing
global warming. For instance, the car exhaust goes into the air and damages the atmosphere. It also harms the
human body when a person breathes in those toxics.

3. Advances in science and technology have made the use of "green" energy possible. In places where
climate conditions permit, people are able to use solar energy or wind energy for power. Solar energy is the
use of sunlight for energy and power. Humans are able to harness the energy of the sun by installing solar
panels on their homes or businesses. Humans have also found ways to harness the power of the wind by
using wind turbines to capture wind energy. Both of these forms of "green" energy are being used more and
more.

4. Psychological illness is very common in today’s era, and especially among teenagers. Depression,
anxiety, personality disorders, and a lot more are common. More than 50% of teenagers are a victim of mental
illness. The question arises that “What is psychological health?” It is a general misconception that only
psychological illness is reflected in the form of disability. This is not the case. Any unusual or unexpected
response from an individual to very common activities is said to be “psychological illness.” For example, a
boy/girl might show aggression over a casual debate at his place. Psychological illness is damaging our youth
and the major reasons behind such illnesses are parental involvement, addictions, and traumas that might be
due to any reason.
There are several solutions to this problem among which the following three can be very easily implemented.
Firstly, individuals must be more active by doing exercise. They should get enough sleep and have a balanced
diet. Their stress must be reduced. Exercise helps in better hormonal secretions that help in reducing stress
and anxiety. It also helps in quitting addictions which most teenagers adopt due to low morale.
Secondly, parents should be better involved in their child’s life. It is the utmost duty of parents to help their
children in facing all the problems with courage rather than leaving them on their own in such a crucial
situation. They should help their child in quitting all sorts of addictions. Generally, teenagers find drugs very
attractive and a symbol of classiness. Some parents do not focus on their children at all and some parents are
over-involved that annoys children.
Thirdly, parents should cut off the communication gap. They should talk to their children about their life. If a
teen is in depression, it is the duty of parents to talk to them because talking about the problem releases stress
and helps in coming back to life.
Teenage is a very crucial phase of life and its handling is similar to that of a fragile good. The above-stated
solutions will help you in handling a depressed teenager. The solutions have no tough schedule. It is all a
matter of time. The solutions have worked for a relative of mine and I hope that these solutions will help you
too.
