Definition of Terms

Alternative Learning System (ALS) - is a parallel education system in the Philippines

that offers out-of-school youth and adult learners the chance to build fundamental and

functional reading skills and access comparable courses to finish their basic education.

Anxiety - a sense of unease, dread, or fear.

Cohorts - a group of persons that have established a connection or are treated

collectively.

Learning Disability - are conditions that limit one's capacity to comprehend or use verbal

or written communication, perform mathematical computations, coordinate movement,

or focus attention.

Dyscalculia - reduces a person's capacity to understand concepts relating to numbers.

Dysgraphia - trouble translating their ideas into written language for their age and

cognitive capacity.

Dyslexia - reading disability brought on by issues recognizing speech sounds and

understanding how they relate to letters and words.

Social Barriers - related to the circumstances under which people are born, grow, live,

learn, work, and age - or social determinants of health - that can contribute to reduced

functioning in people with disabilities.

Social Issues - are topics or subjects that affect a large number of people.
Special Education (SPED) - This Department regularly conducts teacher and

administrator training for children with special educational needs in order to provide

them with access to formal education.
