disability.

I learned what are the different of disability and handicap, Handicap and disability are closely related
terms which are often used concerning people with special needs. As they are very close synonyms, they
are usually interchangeably used. In both situations, social stigma, low self-esteem, and support system
issues may be experienced by the individuals.What is Disability?

WHO defines a disabled individual to have any lack of ability in carrying out an activity in the means
viewed as normal by the community. A disability is a reduced capacity to specifically perform a
movement, detect certain sensory information, or execute a cognitive function.

ThThe term mental retardation is commonly used to refer to people with an intelligence quotient (IQ)
below70. An IQ of 80-130 is considered the normal range, and 100 is considered average. According to
the definition in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV), a
mentally retarded person is significantly limited in at least two of the following areas:

Learning disabilities or learning disorders are umbrella terms for a wide variety of learning problems. A
learning disability is not a problem with intelligence or motivation and kids with learning disabilities
aren’t lazy or dumb. In fact, most are just as smart as everyone else. Their brains are simply wired
differently—and this difference affects how they receive and process information.
SLPs play an important role in this process because there are speech language disorders that can have
the same effect as selective muteness – stuttering, aphasia, apraxia of speech, or dysarthria – and it’s
impimportant to eliminate these as possibilities.

Sensory impairment is when one of your senses; sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste and spatial
awareness, is no longer normal. Examples – If you wear glasses you have a sight impairment , if you find
it hard to hear or have a hearing aid then you have a hearing impairment.

Students with gifts and talents perform—or have the capability to perform—at higher levels compared
to others of the same age, experience, and environment in one or more domains. They require
modification(s) to their educational experience(s) to learn and realize their potential.
