Review of Book
Mehrauli: A View from the Qutb. Text by Charles Lewis, Photographs by Karoki Lewis,
Foreword by William Dalrymple. pp. 141. With colour plates. Xxxxxxx, Harpers Collins Publishers
India, 2002.
doi:10.1017/S1356186305005365
It is unclear what this book wants to be. It is clear is that this is not a scholarly work for it lacks academic
rigour and the scholarly apparatus. It is also clear that this is not a coffee-table book for the text fails to
set the jewel-like photographs into one coherent narrative. It can best be regarded as a collage made
up of historical facts, tourist-guide stories, personal opinion and comments on the present-day state of
Mehrauli, and a superb photographic stroll through the area. It could have been better designed. For
example, reading the preface, and the notes and references (which are on a grainy background) is a
visual challenge.
