EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

1. Before starting with the lay-up process and adequate mold
preparation need to be done. Preparation of mold is divided
into two.
i. Two students have to cut the fiberglass (5’x5’)
based on the layers need for each members which
is:
1. Zuly – 5 layers Cut and measure fiberglass
2. Shazmin – 5 layers
3. Wan Amanina – 7 layers
4. Thanes – 7 layers.
ii. Three students have to clean the Ceramic Tiles
Mosaic as a mold preparation by using scrapper and
cloth to remove the dirt. Then, they need to cut the
transparent’s Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) as a
mold(5’x5’) and stick on the mosaic by using paper Mold preparation
tape.

Stick the mold on the ceramic tiles mosaic

2. Next, each layer of the fiberglass needs to be weighed by

using Electronic Weighting Device. This part is the most
important because it will be determined the mass of the
epoxy resin and the hardener that will be used for lay-up
process.

Weight of each fiberglass

Calculate the amount of both liquids that

need to be used for each student.

3. Then, put a paper cup on the weighting device and slowly

pour the resin and hardener by following the amount of
weight collected of both liquids. The mixing is performed
in the mixing containers by using flat stick (ice-cream
stick) and slowly stir it so it will not entrain any excess air
bubbles in the resin.

Pour both liquids into a cup

Mixed both liquids

4. Before placing the fiberglass on the mold, spray on the

surface of the mold using a spray coating (anti-adhesive).
Then, place the fiberglass on the mold and adequate
quantity of mixed resin and hardener is deposited in the
mold and a scrapper is used to spread it around all the
surface area. The amount of the resin for each layer must
not to add too much resin which will cause too thick of
Spray anti-adhesive on the mold
layer, nor to add less than the necessary amount which will
cause holes in the surface of the part when it is cured.

5. Repeat step 4 until the desired thickness obtained.

Repeat the step for the next layer

6. After all the layers have been done. Let the specimen dry
on its own for 24 hours (one day). Then, remove the
products from the mold and do some finishing process to
give desired shape. Record the weight after lay-up process
and make an analysis from the result obtained.
