BSE-ENGLISH - YEAR II PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

WEEK 11: Overcoming Barriers to Communication, Listening Styles

ACTIVITY:
1. How does each of the five communication skills overcome barriers to communication?
Discuss.
Our thoughts need to be organized and clear before starting a conversation. We may
converse with others about our thoughts in order to make them obvious. Create an atmosphere
of confidence and trust among the participants. The speaker and listener must maintain a
feeling of time for the listener to comprehend and value the speaker's views. We need to
communicate clearly with both our words and our actions. The speaker should use the
question-answer strategy to avoid misunderstandings or misinterpretation. Clearing such
doubts requires the listener's feedback. Use clear, intelligible language when speaking to a
listener. The message must have a goal and be directed towards the audience.
2. Give a scenario that exemplifies each of the five listening skills.
Non-Conforming Listener - Although the manager considers all of her team's proposals, she
does not gave too much importance to a proposal made to her by a co-worker named Larry,
who has a history of delivering poor work performance.
Leisure Listener - As the meeting gets started, Antoinette pays attention to her boss. She is
attentive and expecting positive news and will take this casually.
Emphatic Listener - For instance, if one of my classmates is arguing with someone else in the
room, I can acknowledge that they are stressed out while also taking into account that the
other person is probably not intentionally trying to offend the other person because they are
dealing with their own problems and issues.
Inclusive Listener - For instance, if the head of an organization, such as a school, receives a
letter from the principal and he has an inclusive listening style, he will evaluate the guidelines
or anything the principal says to him during their meetings because there are many things to be
handled quickly. As the person in charge of disseminating the memo, he will take special care to
ensure that it is brief when he announces it. He will carefully consider what the principle wants
to say and determine the primary point.
Stylistic Listener - Here, the receiver or listener frequently inquires about the speaker's
credentials or background. Before passing judgment, they were likely to examine and track the
speaker's movements. For instance, Merinda inquired about the speaker's educational
background, degree earned, and motivations after hearing his speech. The subject for his
speech was decided upon by the speaker.

4. Characterize a person whose listening style is one of the five styles. If possible, give one
who is famous.
A teacher must be inclusive in listening because he or she must consider all of the information
that the students have to say whenever they are asked a question. The teacher must also have
empathy for the pupils.
