Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Digestive system

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the digestive system's components by name.

Students will be able to knowing how each digestive system organ performs its primary role or
functions.
Students will be able to know how to explain the microstructure of a typical cross-section of the
digestive system.
State Standards: LS1-MS-6 “Develop a model to describe how food is rearranged through
chemical reactions forming new molecules that support growth and/or release energy as this
matter moves through an organism.”

Context: I will be teaching this particular lesson to further explain the digestive system and how
it plays a role in breaking down the food and absorbing the nutrients we need for our bodies.
The previous lesson would have been about the structure of the digestive system and what it
looks like and the steps it goes through. After this lesson would be the urinary system and how
the food that was processed through the digestive system goes through the urinary system and
how it works. To prepare them for the next lesson I will be explaining to them step-by-step how
the system works and how it leads into the next system, how our body all works together and
unison to provide an outcome or do what I need to do to keep our bodies healthy.

Data: Students will be grouped in groups of five at a table. I will design activities at these tables
so I could collect data and knowledge from the students whether or not they understand the
structure of the digestive system and how it works.

Closure Lastly a game called around the world I will
ask students various questions and they will
compete against other tables the table that
has the most questions right wins

Procedures:

Introduction -20 minutes

I will start with some trivia. “The small intestine measures 22 feet in length, and its surface area
is 2,700 square feet”. I will follow up by doing a recap of the previous lesson which touched a
little about the digestive system and what is involved. I will then group the students into groups
of five and put them at a table. There should be 5 groups of five at each table. There will be
worksheets, iPads, paper and pencils. Also an organizer with pictures, and diagrams that
explain each part of the digestive system and their function like a monologue or script that they
can follow along like a “little cheat sheet.” Then I will play a video for the students to watch and
enjoy while also gaining more knowledge about the digestive system.
https://youtu.be/ZBZWgrfZFbU
At the end of the video, I will ask the class 3 follow-up questions to this video. I will then come
and collect it and this will be a way for me to collect data on whether or not the class gained
knowledge from this video or if this video was not as engaging and informational as I thought it
would be and to pick a better video next time.
The teacher Directed -15 minutes
I will play a second video that would lead to a discussion-based activity. After watching this
video https://youtu.be/Og5xAdC8EUI I will start a discussion with the class gaining their
understanding and knowledge. I am looking here for discussion, banter, and disagreements so it
can be more interactive. There are no wrong or right questions or answers or statements. I am
just looking to have a discussion with the class about our digestive system and what they think
about it. In their notebooks I want them to write what they think and feel about the digestive
system and 3 facts or information that they now know that they haven't known before.

Collaborative -20 minutes

After our discussion and their notebook writing, we will then get into group activities at their
tables. At their table 2 activities in which they will participate and a worksheet that they will fill
out. The first activity will simply be to create a digestive system by placing the pictures on the
body they will have Velcro so they're able to stick it onto the paper. The second activity will be
naming the structure and its function. lastly the worksheet there will be five questions which will
be based on the functions Of each station of the digestive system for example a question about
the saliva in the mouth and the enzymes or bile the liver or stomach provides These questions
will be based on the chemical and mechanical portions of the digestive system

Independent Digital- 20-25 minutes

Now independently my students will go to the website iPads
https://sciencetrek.org/sciencetrek/topics/digestive_system/games.cfm. On the website, there
are six interactive games and quiz activities that my students can participate in. We will go one
by one through each activity together as a classroom however it will be independent for each
student to do it by themselves that way we are all following along at the same time. Once they
have completed each activity and shown me the results I will record each student's results and
we will then move on to our final portion of the lesson.

Closure- 20-25 minutes

We will end the class by ending it off into interactive game activities one will be Kahoot the other
will be a game that I designed personally. First the Kahoot game, there will be 15 questions
about the Digestive system. The last 5 questions will be about the following urinary system
which will lead us to our next topic. Finally, the game is called All Around the World and with all
the data and information that I gathered from worksheets and the website games and activities I
will pick two people that are at the same level to face each other. I will allow the students to go
head-to-head in a game where each student will face another student at a different table and I
will ask a question based on what we have learned in this lesson and whoever wins that point
by answering that question correctly their table will get a point.

Rationale:

(digestive system video)

This video is an introduction video to the digestive system. This helps support the basic
knowledge of the digestive system that the class already has and further into death describes
the structure of the system. This multimedia item is a video that provides information to the
Students in a brief engaging video. This supports the students' learning objective as it goes
hand-in-hand with being able to identify the digestive system's components by name. As well as
being able to know how each digestive system organ performs its primary role or functions. This
video receives twos and threes when compared to the LORI criterion. Starting the class with an
introduction video instead of a lecture I believe best engages the student's attention is a better
outcome.

(digestive system video2 )

This video will further go into depth about the digestive system. This helps support the basic
knowledge of the digestive system that the class already has and describes How each structure
breaks down the food in the chemical and mechanical part that is involved. This multimedia item
is a video that provides information to the students in a brief engaging video. This supports the
students' learning objective as it goes hand-in-hand with being able to identify the digestive
system's components by name. As well as being able to know how each digestive system organ
performs its primary role or functions. This video receives three when compared to the LORI
criterion.

(sciencetrek website)
I really enjoy this website. It has six built-in games and quiz activities where students can
participate to gain more knowledge and practice. It starts with an introductory quiz to see how
much you know about the subject. Then you have a game-based activity Before time runs out,
respond to questions regarding the digestive system's organs and activities before time runs
out, respond to questions regarding the digestive system's organs and activities. In the third
activity you're able to examine a tutorial and then after finishing the tutorial, start playing the
game where a quiz and two difficulty levels are present. Then you have a digestive quiz and
even a crossword puzzle activity. Last but not least a coloring page we're able to color the
different structures\parts of the digestive system. This app receives three and four using the
LORI criterion. This website is very accessible and interactive for all students to access if a
student is a more visual Learner B tutorial or even coloring page would probably best fit them if
you have a student that's more engaged with the words and vocabulary the word search
crossword puzzles or quizzes my best fit them there are all kinds of activities and games that
the students can utilize that will best fit them and challenge them. This use of multimedia
differentiates training by allowing students to independently practice what they just learned from
the lesson and make a connection.
(Kahoot app)
Kahoot has been utilized or is well-known among teachers and students. For all grade levels, it
is an excellent game and quizzing tool. To ensure that the game has the questions I want and
has pictures and diagrams I can implement, I will make the game myself. This game will serve
as a test and study tool. I'll be able to tell which kids have a grasp of the subject and which are
still struggling. This will not be a group table activity, it will be an individual activity so I'll be able
to assess with students our understanding of the concept and what shootings are not.
