ASSIGNMENT 3 (Instruction): Observe any instructional time in your assigned classroom, and record

your observations when presented with the questions below:

Instruction Question 1: What is the posted daily schedule for different subjects or periods? >>>

Instruction Question 2: Is instruction done in small groups, centers, whole groups, individual? >>>

Instruction is done in whole groups then break down into smaller groups

Instruction Question 3: How would you describe your cooperating teacher’s teaching style? >>>

The teacher is very hands on, and does a lot of visuals.

Instruction Question 4: Does the teacher incorporate the sensory modalities (learning styles)? If so, give
examples. >>>

The teacher uses a lot of visuals to help explain step by step procedures, or she uses hands on
examples.

Instruction Question 5: Do the students seem engaged in the lesson(s) that are being presented?
Please explain. >>>

The students were always excited to participate and give their answers even if they didn’t know
it. The students would throw their hands up in excitement about almost every topic to get their
word in.

Instruction Question 6: Explain the use of culturally relevant materials, teaching strategies, class décor,
etc.  that meet the needs of today’s culturally diverse student population.  >>>

Posters, books, and even craft activities included different races and ethnicities on them. One
book was even called, “I Am Enough”. The classroom decorations had a lot of diversity, and
although the students were young the teacher was able to throw out some tiny phrases on
everyone is to be included no matter what.
Instruction Question 7: Is instructional time managed efficiently? Please explain >>>

The teacher managed her time well. She would set timers when it got busy to move on, and she
always kept her eye on the clock. If there were long projects they would have to wrap things up,
but always finished on time.

Instruction Question 8: How does the cooperating teacher handle transitions from one subject or period
to another, and are these transitions efficient? >>>

The teacher does transitions by saying things like “After you finish this, then do…”. Or after
math was done, she let the students buddy read until it was time for the next lesson of social
studies.

Instruction Question 9: List ways that the teacher attempts any “attention getting” commands? (Ex:
Countdown, Light flicker, Heads on Desk) How effective are they? >>>

Teacher: Hocus Pocus


Students: Everybody focus!
Teacher: Mashed potatoes and…
Students: Gravy!

Instruction Question 10: What specific behavior issues does the teacher have to deal with? How does
the teacher deal with these behavior issues? Be specific. >>>

Some behaviors the teacher has to work with are interrrupting, getting out of chairs, not
following along, talking, frustration (one student got a little violent due to frustration). The
teacher will send notes home, give a couple chances to correct themselves, offers marbles as
rewards.

Instruction Question 11: Are there any policies or procedures in place that help or hinder instructional
time? If so, explain them and how they help or hinder use of instructional time. >>>

One thing the teacher does that helps instructional time is after recess she stops at the
bathroom so everybody goes and they can get right to work without taking a ton of bathroom
breaks during the lesson.

Instruction Question 12: What philosophical teaching orientation(s) best describes this teacher? Give
examples. >>>

Instruction Question 13: Outline the lesson plan for a teaching lesson you observed.  What preparations
in advance were need for teaching the lesson? >>>

Informative writing
Students created a wheel of hobbies they liked/enjoy doing and then as a whole group shared
those ideas together to create a poster board. Student then picked their favorite and wrote
about it like they were “specialist”. After, the students created a miniature them with paper
crafts to glue next to their final draft.

Instruction Question 14: Describe both teacher and student uses of technology in the classroom. >>>

The students use computers for Iready which go over different topics (math, reading, etc). They
do well on the computers. The teacher uses her computer for printing, monitoring Iready, email,
etc. She also uses the elmo.
