A. Rationale

(Purpose)

Glue is an adhesive substance that can be used to attach any materials or objects.

According to the definition, any substance that combines two or more surfaces in a single,

semi-permanent to permanent bond is a glue. Numerous people use glue every day for a

variety of purposes. Students, in example, use glue for projects and many other things that

can assist them in class or with their assignments. Additionally, adhesive glue, which is

made of rubber, is used in construction to cost-effectively connect components and

distribute load tension across joints.

Most glues today are made from animals. They gather animal skins, bones, gelatins,

milk proteins and serum albumin from animal blood. They gather collagen because it has

strong fibers that work as a glue.

B. Statement of the Problem

Our purpose is to make an artificial glue that is made of resin. Resin is a substance

that is used for multiple purposes. It is commonly used for making durable casting, arts and

crafts and it's an excellent adhesive. Resin can be gathered from plants, that is why we want

to make glue by using plants rather than animal parts. That is why Chrysophyllum Cainito

or Star Apple (mostly known in the Philippines as Caimito) comes to place. The caimito is

full of resins that will work perfectly in our research.

The sap of the star apple is cheaper and also sticky like the ordinary white glue

because we can get its sap from its tree or in the fruit of star apple by extracting it from its

peel and it is a common fruit that you can find easily. The extract of the Star Apple’s

(Chrysophyllum cainito) leaves can make glue because it contains alkaloid, resin, resinic

acid and other substances that can be used as glue. Nowadays, synthetic adhesives are

sometimes toxic to humans by sniffing it. They contain toxins that can pose mild to severe

risks to health. However natural adhesives are almost forgotten because they take time to be

made and they’re not practical anymore, but they do not cause health risks toxin's. In this

study, researchers will focus more on how effective are organic adhesives as alternate to

ordinary adhesives.

Alternative Glue

This investigatory project aims to sought the following questions:

1. How does the reagents like baking soda and cornstarch affect the duration of the

alternative glue from star apple leaves?

2. If there is a change in the environment such as temperature or with the presence

of water, will it affect the adhesiveness of the alternative glue?

3. Does adding color pigments in the alternative glue affect its adhesiveness?

C. Hypotheses:

1. Multiple reagents like baking soda and cornstarch has significant effect on the

duration of the alternative glue from star apple leaves.

2. If there is a change in the environment such as temperature or with the presence

of water, then the adhesiveness of the alternative glue will be affected.

3. Adding color pigments in the alternative glue has no significant effect on the

adhesiveness of the glue itself.

D. The Significance of the Study

Our research about the use of leaves from Chrysophyllum Cainito a.k.a star apple

upon using it as a way to make an artificial glue is important to a lot of things, especially in

material assembly, packaging, etc. The result of this study will be of great benefit to the

following:

1. To the students, it is important for our young and smart students to learn

about their academics. Its also helps them to create their school works and

projects. They will also gain knowledge and understanding at glue and how

it can be made artificially.

Alternative Glue

2. In our economy, as star apple plant doesn’t have much economical

purposes aside from its edible fruit, our group wants to make this product

to introduce it commercially as an alternative glue, wherein the main

ingredient is the resin from the sap of the leaves of the said plant.

3. To the environment, by making an important product with the use of star

apple leaves, we will introduce ways to make alternative glues made from

plants and resins. Compared to other glues like synthetic or super glues,

organic glues are not that much toxic, thus it also contribute to the

environment in our very own way.

E. Scope and Limitations

1. This study focuses on extracting the resin from the leaves of

Chrysophyllum cainito or star apple in order to make an alternative glue that is

useful in various purposes like in school works and projects.

2. We also aim to find a way to make star apple have an economic purpose.

3. We, the researchers will conduct the Research study entitled “Potential

use of Chrysophyllum caimito a.k.a. Star Apple as an Alternative Glue" in Pulong

Buhangin National High School, Km. 38, Pulong Buhangin, Sta. Maria, Bulacan this

coming September 2022 to February 2023.

F. Materials Needed
The Potential Use of Leaves From Chrysophyllum Cainito a.k.a. Star Apple as an
Alternative Glue

The researchers list down the materials and procedure needed in making the

alternative glue made of star apple leaves. The materials needed are the following:

 20-30 pcs. Fresh Star Apple Leaves – The sap from its leaves is the main

substance needed for creating our glue, as sticky resins are found in the said

material.

 ¼ cup Cornstarch – A thickening agent.

 ½ tsp. Baking soda – Will be used for faster setting and curing time and for

strengthening the bond that the glue will produce.

 100 ml. Water – Will be added to dissolve the mixture.

 Small bottle container

 Measuring spoons and cups

 Timer – For measuring and observation purposes.
