Step 1: Define and describe the problem.

Choose something that bugs you or seems problematic. Be as specific as you can be. What
exactly is the problem? Whom does it hurt or inconvenience? How does it hurt or inconvenience
them?

Something currently that seems problematic, it being hurricane season, is flooding in many
areas around where I live. This is not only a problem around me, but worldwide. Flooding from
storms and rain, especially in low lying areas, are a problem for many people. Not only people
homes, but businesses and schools. Hearing updates on how the weather is currently, I’m
hearing about cars being stuck in water, roads closed due to high waters and so many accidents.
This is the result of not only so much rain we have been experiencing, but the flooding that it
causes.

Step 2: Define your goal in addressing the problem.

When your problem is solved, how will the situation be better? Will it be cleaner? Less wasteful?
Safer? Less expensive? Don’t focus yet on how you will solve the problem.

Addressing this problem is a little tricky. As this problem is caused randomly by nature, its hard to predict
when and where it will occur to be able to think ahead of the problem. There are still ways of prevention
in my opinion. Especially when you know where the floods are most likely to occur and the high traffic,
low lying areas. Will there still be flooding, most likely. However, there will be less flooding that cause
accidents, delays, damage and even some deaths. Solutions to this problem would take time, money and
man power.

Step 3: Generate multiple ideas for solving the problem.

Could any of the solutions to problems from the Project Resources be adapted to help solve your
problem? Explain how.

No. None of the projects from Project Resources can help with this problem. Why? Because for
some reason I seemed to have focused on one of life’s major problems versus one of life’s little
problems.

Can you combine multiple solutions to come up with a new solution? Explain how.

You absolutely can combine multiple solutions to come up with a new solution. There are hundreds of
ideas floating around out in the world to resolve this major problem. Not only will combining multiple
solutions solve this particular problem of flooding, but I’m sure in combining solutions it will end up
solving multiple problems as well.

What are your top picks? Briefly describe the few best solution ideas you’ve come up with and
how they will help solve the problem.

One of my top picks for if not completely solving the worlds flooding problem, than at least lightening it
is to update and correct most of drainage on the roads. Now while this will help the roads we drive on,
this most likely won’t help the low lying areas where a lot of business and homes exist. My ultimate to
pick is water absorbing asphalt. This new type of concrete is known to absorb around 4,000 litres of
water in 60 seconds. An amazing invention and one I hope will start being used everywhere soon.

Step 4: Represent your chosen solution in words and/or pictures.

Pick the best idea you generated in Step 3.

Step 5: Analyze and evaluate your chosen solution.

Does it address the problem you identified in Step 1? Does it achieve the goal you defined in
Step 2? If not, why not?

Yes. This amazing “thirsty” concrete does address the problem I identified in Step 1. Not only does it
solve the problem of flooding from too much rain, but from oceans flooding over from tsunamis and
lakes overflowing from hurricanes etc etc. It would address every single problem in Step 2. From homes
being flooded in low lying areas, to cars being stuck in water. Maybe not the accident part. That problem
is half the rain, not necessarily the flooding part, and definitely half people just not paying attention and
using precaution when driving in conditions that require such.
