INTRODUCTION
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Detecting someone’s non-verbal cues is a social skill that plays an

important role in our daily lives. We create and improve this skill
by receiving feedback from others; they tell us whether the
observed non-verbal behavior is judged right or wrong. In this
way, we increase understanding about ourselves and other
individuals. Non-verbal behaviors are of central importance to the
expression of emotions .Our face, along with other non-verbal
cues, can be used to deceive others about our feelings and
thought. When you hear this statement about deceiving others,
you probably immediately think of deceiving in a way that you
betray someone. However, there is another way of deceiving, that
is not that negatively loaded. Think about all the scripted reality
shows you can watch on the television, these actors in a way
deceive you about their feelings and thoughts as well since they
act as if they have these feelings and thoughts. This kind of deceit,
will be the topic of interest in this study.

While detecting whether emotions are fake or real, body

movements are really important. A rich source of information lies
in the ways that people move their bodies and therefore,
understanding how deceptive intents can be detected from bodily
actions .So, not only facial expressions are important to decide
whether an emotion is fake or real, but also the body movements
can be watched to detect deceptive intents.
In this study the focus will be on the difference between genuine
and non-genuine facial expression as well as handshakes. For this
research, we decided to use only video clips showing men &
women expressing their emotions. The clips were collected from
The ‘Kapil Sharma Show’ a reality television show.

 Human interaction is genuinely driven through the

communication skills of living beings and interactions is an
integral component of their lives. All conversations are comprised
of verbal language for transmitting the desired information and
non-verbal language that actually presents the true intentions of
the speaker.

 Communication is everywhere but to have a focused

consideration of its non-verbal impact, context of conversation
would enhance the understanding of the phenomenon.

 Communication requires both verbal and non-verbal aspects of

conversation of completion and clarity but the need is to address
the subliminal impact of the second component

WHAT WE FIND IN RESEARCH ARTICLES

Communication is a process in which people verbally or non-

verbally share information and ideas. Non-verbal communication
can be best defined as a silent form of communicating with a
person or party without using any form of speech to grab the
attention of the audience or to exploit a message. Non-verbal
communication is often used to express a thought or thoughts
and make your message more appealing and interesting to the
person you are speaking to. Non-verbal communication has a
great influence on our social environment and the whole
communication process. There are four important functions of
non-verbal communication. These functions can complement,
regulate, substitute for, or accent a verbal message. In addition to
these functions, there are many types of non-verbal
communication: paralanguage, body movement, facial
expressions, eye messages, attractiveness, clothing, body
adornment, space and distance, touch, time, smell, and manners

 Eye Contact - Eye contact is a reflection of teachers’ connection

with students providing them a great sense of interest and
energy to contribute in the classroom. For instance, one of the
participants responded, “I can only concentrate and understand
better when teacher is looking towards me while speaking or
when I ask question”.

 Body Language -The usual placement and movements of

teachers, use of space, and bodily responses over students’
behaviour not only guide but also shape up the process of
learning. For instance, another said, “I just got a wave of
activeness when the teacher is actively participating in the
tasks, has created an atmosphere of excitement with
interactive sessions and conducts role plays type activities”.
BODY LANGUAGE
 Gestures- Posture, facial expressions, and gestures such as thumbs up
while responding to a certain behaviour or answer of a student encourages
the attempt. For instance, one student added, “My teacher uses to nod,
give appreciatory responses by thumbs up gesture which is very
encouraging for me. I just like that moment”.
