Root Locus

Q1. (a) A unity feedback system has an open loop transfer function G(s)=K(s+1)/s(s-1). Sketch
the root locus plot with ‘K’ as variable parameter and show that the loci of complex roots are
part of a circle with (-1,0) as center and radius=√2.
(b) Is the system stable for all values of K? If not, determine the range of K for stable system
operation. Find also the marginal value of K which causes sustained oscillations and frequency
of these oscillations.
Q2. Plot the root loci for the closed loop control system with G(s)= K/s(s+1)(s2+4s+5) , H(s)=1.
Q3. The block diagram of a control system tachometer feedback is depicted below. Sketch the
root loci of the characteristic equation for the K ˃ 0 and when 𝐾𝑡 = 0.

Q4. The open loop transfer function of a control system is given by:
G(s)H(s)=K/s(s+6)(s2+4s+13)
Sketch the root locus and determine: (a) the breakaway points (b) the angle of departure from
the complex poles (c) the stability condition.
Q5. Sketch the root locus plot for the open loop transfer function given below:
G(s)H(s)=K(s2+4)/s(s+2)
Calculate the value of K at (a) breakaway point (b) s = -0.69+j0.9.
