The type of the project: novel.

The title of the project: Outskirts.
Robert Lisum (his last name is an anagram from Musil, who is one of my favourite
writers, and at the same time works as a more or less subtle reverence for the great Austrian
writer) is a thirty years old Bucharest based filmmaker. A convinced liber and dissatisfied by the
fact that his three short films did not achieve the success he would have liked, he intends to make
a feature film that would be an adaptation of a Romanian novel entitled Interior (one of title
versions was Margini/Outskirts) and written by Constantin Fântâneru, a little-known writer for
whom Lisum has developed an irrepressible fascination. The location scouting for the film,
which is constantly hampered by many kinds of difficulties, is carried out in twelve areas from
the outskirts of the Romanian capital. The casting, carried out in an unusual manner (private
meetings with the actors), is systematically sabotaged by an extremely irritating producer. The
attempts to find financing solutions for entering into production seem to be doomed to failure. As
if all this is not enough, our protagonist, faithful to his obsession for the filmography of the great
French filmmaker Jean Eustache, is desperately trying to find an actress resembling the
legendary Françoise Lebrun, who became famous for her role in the masterpiece La Maman et la
putain, and he ends up being in love with three of the actress that come at the casting. Among the
problems and film related dilemmas, however, Lisum finds time to remember some significant
moments from his past, thus discovering the reasons why he always was a platonic ladies' man.
This novel will be both a portrait of Bucharest and a book in which Bucharest becomes a
vivid character. The twelve chapters will be named after the twelve months of the year during
which the action will take place, and this volume will open a series of novels of the kind that can
be found in the bibliographies of authors such as Philip Roth (Kepesh and Zuckerman series) or
Richard Ford (Bascombe series). It will be, in a way, a false family novel.

Robert Lisum (numele său de familie e o anagramă de la Musil și funcționează, în același timp,
ca un mai mult sau mai puțin subtil omagiu pentru marele scriitor austriac) este un cineast
bucureștean de treizeci de ani. Celibatar convins și nemulțumit de faptul că cele trei scurtmetraje
ale sale nu au atins succesul pe care și l-ar fi dorit, își propune să debuteze în lungmetraj cu o
adaptare a unui roman românesc intitulat Interior și scris de Constantin Fântâneru, un scriitor
prea puțin cunoscut pentru care Lisum dezvoltă o feblețe irepresibilă. Prospecțiunile, care sunt
îngreunate constant de dificultăți de toate felurile, se desfășoară în douăsprezece zone aflate la
periferia capitalei României. Castingul, desfășurat într-o manieră neobișnuită (întâlniri private cu
actorii), este sabotat sistematic de o producătoare extrem de enervantă. Încercările de a găsi
finanțări pentru intrarea în producție par a fi sortite eșecului. De parcă toate acestea nu ar fi
suficiente, protagonistul nostru, fidel obsesiei sale pentru filmografia marelui cineast francez
Jean Eustache, încearcă cu disperare să găsească o actriță care să semene cu legendara Francoise
Lebrun, eroina din capodopera La maman et la putain, și sfârșește prin a se îndrăgosti absolut
nebunește de trei dintre actrițele pe care le cunoaște cu ocazia castingului. Printre probleme și
dileme cinematograpfice, Lisum găsește totuși timp pentru a rememora câteva momente
semnificative din trecutul său, descoperind astfel motivele pentru care a ajuns să descopere, la
vârsta de 30 de ani, că este un afemeiat înverșunat.
Acest roman va fi atât un portret al Bucureștiului, cât și o carte în care Bucureștiul devine
personaj. Cele douăsprezece capitole vor purta numele celor douăsprezece luni ale anului
calendaristic de-a lungul căruia se va desfășura acțiunea, iar acest volum va inaugura o serie
romanescă de tipul celor care pot fi găsite în operele/bibliografiile unor autori precum Philip
Roth sau Richard Ford.
