Word Problems on Linear Equations in Two Variables

1. The sum of two integers is 6. The smaller number is 18 less than twice the larger number. What is
the smaller number?
2. A car takes 15 minutes going uphill a 10-kilometer distance from point A to point B. However, it
only takes the same car 5 minutes to go downhill from point B to point A. Assume that the speed of
the car and the effect of the incline was the same for both trips. What would have been the speed
of the car on a flat road in kph?
3. Rob is experimenting with how much milk to put in a bottle of coffee for his bottle latte business.
For the first batch, he mixed 1.5L of milk to a container and ended up with a total of 3L of latte. For
the second batch, he was not able to take note of how much latte he was able to make but noted
that it was 75% milk. After some more research, he learned that it is ideal that 2/3 of the latte is
milk. To avoid wasting the first two batches, he mixed them to get the desired ratio of milk. How
much of the second batch must he add to the first batch? How much latte in the correct ratio
would he get?
4. In 2001, Kaye’s age was thrice her sibling Paul’s. In 2009, the sum of the ages of Kaye and Paul is
20. How old was Kaye in 2001?
5. A sketch of a free throw area composed of a rectangle and a semicircle along its width is shown
below. The rectangle has a total perimeter of 64 feet. Its width is 3/5 of its length. What is the
perimeter of the whole free throw area (lined in red)?

6. Joshua has Php15,000 in the bank. He wants to take a portion of it and invest in a company which
promises to give him an interest of 8% after one year. However, he wishes to leave some of it in
the bank to earn 5% per annum without risk. After one year, he earned Php 900.00 of interest.
