USE OF INFINITIVE, GERUND AND NAKED INFINITIVE

1. Gerund is used:
a. After certain verbs: I enjoy singing.
b. After prepositions: I drank some water after finishing the race
c. When the verb acts as the SUBJECT or OBJECT of the sentence: Smoking is bad
for your health
2. Infinitive is used:
a. After certain verbs: We decided to do it
b. After many adjectives: Maths are difficult to understand
c. To show purpose: I came to see you.
3. Bare infinitive is used:
a. After modal verbs: I can swim backstroke
b. After “let” and “make”: Let me see / Make me do it
c. After verbs of perception: I hear them come
4. Verbs that change in meaning depending on the following verb:
a. Stop: I stopped smoking 5 years ago. Let’s stop to smoke.
b. Forget: He forgot closing the door / Don’t forget to close the door (when you
leave)
c. Remember: I remember closing the door / Remember to close the door (when
you leave)
d. Regret: I regret drinking last night / I regret to inform that we have an exam
e. Try: Try running for 30 minutes every day / try to run 100 m. in less than 10
seconds
