Zinc Oxide Ointment

• Zinc oxide ointment is an over-the counter (OTC) astringent
with mild antiseptic properties.
• Category: astringent ,antiseptic and protective.
• Uses of zinc oxide topical:
1. Used to treat skin irritation and mild wound.
2. Treat diaper rash(nappy rash) by forming protective barrier
between the diaper and skin
3. Used in sunscreens to Prevent sunburns ,forming a
protective layer to protect skin from UV rays.
 Rx
zinc oxide ointment (B.P)
zinc oxide 150 gm
simple ointment 850 gm

• Procedure:
1. Weigh accurately all the ingredients.
2. Triturate zinc oxide with a portion of simple ointment
until smooth.
3. Gradually add the rest of simple ointment.
4. Preserve in well-closed container and protect from
light.

Zinc & Castor oil ointment

• Castor oil is vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of Ricinus

Communis plant.
• Role of castor oil in topical preparation:
1. Castor oil is a natural moisturizer.
2. Promote wound healing ; castor oil contains fatty acids with
anti-inflammatory and pain-reducing properties.
3. Zinc &castor oil ointment is very effective in treating
diaper rash

(100 gm)

Salicylic Acid Ointments

• Salicylic acid is keratolytic agent and has little antiseptic activity.
• Due to its keratolytic effect , salicylic acid enhances the penetration
of corticosteroids.
• Uses of salicylic acid ointments:
1. Used in treatment of corn and wart.
2. Used in treatment of Acne (salicylic acid solution).
3. Used in treatment of psoriasis and some types of eczema.
Salicylic Acid Ointment 5%
Rx
Salicylic acid 5g
Petrolatum 95 g

Procedure:
1. Weigh 5 grams of salicylic acid.
2. Triturate the salicylic acid with equal amount of petrolatum and
mix properly.
3. add the rest of petrolatum gradually and mix until homogeneous.

Whitefield’s Ointment
• Whitefield’s ointment combines a fungistatic activity (and
weak antibacterial activity) with keratolytic properties.
• It is used for superficial skin infections caused by fungi(such as
athlete’s foot).
• Used in treatment of psoriasis ,eczema and other skin
conditions
• Used in treatment of acne and corn.
Whitefield’s Ointment
Rx
Benzoic acid 5 gram
Salicylic acid 5 gram
Emulsifying ointment 90 gram

Procedure:
1. Weigh 5 g of benzoic acid , 5 g of salicylic acid .
2. Mix benzoic acid with salicylic acid .
3. Triturate the mixture with 10 g of emulsifying ointment
until homogeneous
4. Add the rest of emulsifying ointment gradually and mix until
homogeneous .
