MOVIE ANALYSIS: Dante's Peak (1997)

a. State briefly the synopsis of the story.

- Mayor Rachel Wando and volcanologist Harry Dalton ultimately persuade the unconvinced people that
the big one is due to erupt and that they need to leave right away. However, she later learns that her two
children have gone up the mountain to retrieve their grandmother. They need to save the grandchildren
and granny before the volcano erupts in a blaze of flame and ash a million times more powerful than an
atomic bomb, but time is running out.

b. What was the hazard that struck the locality and the disaster that came along with the said hazard?
Was there an impending disaster to happen all along?

- However, life in the lake was first roasted to death before being ripped apart by tsunamis. Death did
indeed arrive from below. What happened was when hot gas and lava burst through vents beneath the
lake's surface, steaming and boiling. And yes, we cannot guarantee that a tragedy like an eruption won't
occur in our nation. Given our proximity to the volcano and the explosion that is currently taking place
within us, it was only natural. Therefore, there is a chance that this will occur to us.

c. What went wrong in the disaster risk reduction management of the locality?

- Disaster risk reduction in the area is problematic since people were unconcerned, did not trust Harry's
assurances, and were aware that the volcano would eventually erupt. A significant earthquake happens
as they tell the populace about the evacuation plan.

d. What are your suggestions in order to have a more resilient disaster risk response if a similar event will
happen in our country, knowing that this scenario is inevitable since the Philippines sits in the Pacific
Ring of Fire?
- In my opinion, emergency management planning should be based on risk and integrated with the
strategic planning of the government and communities in order to build catastrophe resilience. Risks and
risk management strategies should be taken into account for the social, constructed, economic, and
ecological contexts.
