Lesson 18- Management of waste

Grade : 6 Subject: Science

1. Mindmap:
Ch-18 CW Q&A

1. What are the two main types of wastes based on their degradability?

A. There are mainly two types of wastes:

Biodegradable wastes, such as kitchen and other plant and animal wastes, which can be
degraded by the action of organisms.

Non-biodegradable wastes, like plastics, metals and glass, which cannot be degraded by the
organisms

2. How is compost prepared from kitchen wastes?

A. The kitchen wastes generally include vegetable and fruit peels, egg shells, waste food etc.,
which are completely biodegradable. We put these waste into a pit and cover them with soil. After
some days, we observe that they are completely degraded. Take them out of the pit and mix it in
the soil where you grow your favourite plants. The final form of the wastes mixed with soil is
called compost.

3. Define landfill and composting.

A. Ways of managing biodegradable wastes are:

Landfill: Garbage is collected in trucks and are taken to a low-lying open area called
landfills.

Composting: The rotting and conversion of some biodegradable materials into manure is
called composting.

4. Discuss about the advantage and disadvantages of plastics.

A.

Uses of plastic:
Plastic goods like, containers, boxes, jars, etc., are used for keeping edible goods. They do
not spoil.

The goods in plastic pack can be carried anywhere easily.

Plastic pickings are light in weight, good looking, cheap and best and durable.

No chemical effects on it

Demerits of plastic:

Plastic bags do not decompose in soil and cause decreasing of fertility.

Most of the people fill the peelings and rotten fruits and vegetables in plastic bags. They
throw them on roads, in drains or in fixed dustbins from where cattle like cows, dogs, pigs,
bulls, etc., eat them with plastic bags. These bags are not digested by the animals and they
suffer from diseases.

5. Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilizers? Why?

A. Yes, it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilizers for the following reasons:

 It is easy to prepare compost

 Compost is environment friendly as it does not cause any health issues in humans and
animals
 It will not cause pollution
 It increases soil fertility.
 It is biodegradable

6. How does landfilling lead to environmental pollution?

A.

 Landfilling involves placing waste underground and covering it with soil.

 If land is covered with organic waste, the waste decomposes and produces methane gas.
 It becomes a long term source of air pollution.
 Landfill sites also contaminate the water table and destroy wildlife habitats.
