Submission on further limitation of antibiotic use in animal husbandry to the Energy, Environment

& Culture Commission of Labour’s National Policy Forum

I would like to submit a proposal to place further limitations on antibiotic use in animal husbandry.
This would help to address the growing problem of antibiotic resistance and would also answer in
part the question “How do we guarantee that we meet the challenges in the food sector including
tackling food poverty and supporting our farmers?” asked in the Energy, Environment & Culture
Commission’s discussion paper.

I would like to submit a proposal to:

1) Ban the importation of meat, milk, eggs and other products from animals in which antibiotics
have been used as growth promotors.

2) Ban the use of any new classes of antibiotic in animals unless such new classes of antibiotic are
found to be safe only in animals, are therefore not used in humans and do not cause resistance to
medicines used in humans.
