Created on 2 August 2011 NRF Thuthuka grant call for proposals

The NRF Thuthuka call is currently open for young and emerging researchers. The programme promotes the attainment of a doctoral qualification, postdoctoral research experience and attainment of NRF ratings. The call is made annually as a joint funding between the NRF & universities.

Who

Thuthuka was restructured at the beginning of 2011 into three main streams as follows: 1.

PhD track supports researchers who are conducting their research for a doctoral qualification. The requirements in this category are: South African citizens only a minimum of a master's degree currently registered for a doctoral degree under the age of 45 at the time of first application, exceptions may be made proof of a commitment from the employer institution allowing the applicant time off for research and relief of teaching duties to conduct fieldwork/research submission of endorsement by a nominated supervisor supporting the proposed doctoral work to be undertaken

Post-PhD track. The requirements for participating in this programme are: South African citizens only obtained a doctoral degree no more than five years prior to the date of first application under the age of 45 at the time of first application, exceptions may be made

NRF rating track support. The requirements for this programme are: South African citizens and permanent residents only

Created on 2 August 2011 has obtained a doctoral degree or undergone equivalent research training based on research experience and research outputs a research focus has been identified in an area in which the applicant plans to establish a research track record applicants must demonstrate that they have been unable to establish themselves as researchers due to limited research opportunities (e.g. working in an institution with limited research infrastructure and research activity)

When The call is opened between 27 June and 16th of September 2011. Unisa has quality improvement processes and systems in place. As such we would like all applications to have been completed on NRF Online by 15 August 2011 (college closing date) to enable the college research committees to appoint experts to review each application (content integrity and quality). The Research Department will close the processes on 25 August 2011 (university closing date) to enable administrative and process review committees to finalise the university submission to the NRF.
