When attempting to gauge Madison’s reading fluency, I decided to use the

Multidimensional Fluency Scale to assess her fluency using a passage from the Qualitative

Reading Inventory on November 4th, 2022. Using the level 5 expository passage, I scored her

overall expression and volume a score of three because her volume was generally appropriate.

However, she occasionally fell into expressionless reading throughout the passage. I also gave

her an overall score of three for her phrasing while reading. She would occasionally read

smoothly but then pause to decode a word. This would cause choppiness throughout the passage.

When assessing her smoothness while reading, I scored her a three as well, since she

occasionally breaks her rhythm when attempting to read a difficult word. I have noticed this

several other times when she is reading as well because she pauses to figure out a word for quite

some time or else, she skips it. Her overall pace when reading was consistent and appropriate

throughout the passage.

Overall, Madison scored a total of 13 out of 16 points possible using the

multidimensional fluency scale rubric. She is making progress towards increasing her fluency by

reading with larger phrases and by keeping a consistent pace throughout a passage. However, I

believe that she can increase her fluency by correcting common mistakes that she makes while

decoding and by using more expression when she reads.
