Company Analysis
Report
MNG 209
Introduction to Management
Research report of a
company
• It is an individual assignment
• Each student receives one company to
analyse
• 25% of the final grade in the course
• The goal of this project is to analyze an
organization and offer your own
recommendations regarding how the
organization might improve its
competitive advantage.
• The final report should be about four
pages in length (750 – 1,000 words) and
follow the guidelines provided.
The report should provide:
Main task

The report will involve researching a company: conducting a SWOT

analysis of the organization (i.e. strength, weakness, opportunities, and
threats) and identifying two or more ways to create a competitive
advantage (i.e. Efficiency, innovation, responsiveness to customers and
quality).

a) A general description of the organization, its situation and history.

b) A SWOT analysis of the organization.
c) Two or more ways to create a competitive advantage.
1. A general description of the organization,
its situation and history (about 1 page)
This section provides an overview of the company.
The first page should provide a general overview of the organization
you have been assigned; these assignments are posted on
Blackboard.
The overview of the organization should include the major products
or services, number of employees, major locations, financial
performance (e.g., revenue, profits, recent trends, etc.), company
main markets, brief history….

In particular: the markets (products and services, geographies) that

the company is active in
and
a brief history of how the company reached to where it is today
(past strategies, ownership, etc..).
SWOT Analysis (about 2 pages)

The next step is to conduct a SWOT analysis of the organization and the relevant
environment. You should consult at least five recent references to gather your
information. This section should have four sub-sections with each sub-section
being about half a page in length.

• The first sub-section should describe two of the organization’s main

strengths. These might include products, manufacturing capabilities, brand
awareness, locations, or financial performance. The main point is that you
should be critical in identifying true strengths of the organization and describe
them. Why do you think this strength is a strength?

• The next sub-section should describe two of the organization’s main

weaknesses. These might include poor product quality, high costs, or
inadequate marketing. Again, be critical in identifying the most important
limitations and explain them.
The next two sub-sections should address the organization’s
relevant environment:
• The first of these should identify and describe two potential
opportunities. These might include new products or services,
new markets, or vertical integration (backward or forward –
Check chapter 8).
• The last sub-section should describe two potential threats. Is
there increased competition? Are customer preferences
changing? Are costs rising? … It is important to base these threats
on your research and not on your own opinions.

Everything you list and describe need to be based on facts

(reference). Facts are found in sources. Not your personal opinion.
If you include your opinion, you need to explain WHY you think so –
it is not enough just to say what you belive, but you need to justify
your thoughts. Why do you belive so? What made you think so? …
Example
Your company: First Abu Dhabi Bank
Strength 1
Is the biggest company in the UAE. (you list this strenght)
Being the biggest and first is a strenght for companies as they control
the majority of the market (Smith, 2022). Etc…
(you justify why this is a strength with a source)
Competitive Advantage (about 1 page)
The last page should present two specific strategic recommendations for how the
organization might enhance its competitive advantage.
• At a general level, you might consider the four paths to building a competitive
advantage (Chapter 1): efficiency, quality, responsiveness to customers, and
innovation, but you must be more specific than this. Also, consider business-
and corporate- level strategies, when suggesting a future plan (Chapter 8).
• You should use your SWOT analysis to suggest two strategic ideas that would
help the organization achieve its major goals. Your two recommendations or
ideas can be directly related to each other (i.e., sub-parts of a single strategy) or
they may be different from each other (i.e., involve two unrelated strategic
directions).
• Formulating new strategies often involves building on the strengths, taking
advantage of opportunities, correcting weaknesses, or countering threats.
Although new strategies rarely guarantee future success, your proposal should
be consistent with your SWOT analysis, based on good research, and be realistic in
the world of business.
Do not Plagiarize!
In academia, one of the worst sins you can commit is to plagiarize:
1. Write ideas of others and claim is your work
2. Buying an assignment
You don’t want to do that!
When you don’t acknowledge that you are using someone else’s ideas or
writing, that is plagiarism (stealing).
In academic writing, you acknowledge the ideas of others by citing them in
the body of your paper and in the bibliography.
The use of unacknowledged ideas or writing is plagiarism. This includes published works, but also includes
using papers written by other students.
If someone else write the assignment for you, purchasing an assignment, is
cheating.
Plagiarism and cheating will be punished.
Format
The front page should have a title such as
“A Strategic Analysis of McDonald’s
Corporation”
and include your name and ID.

The paper should be double-spaced, use

12-point Times New Roman font and be
about four pages (750 - 1,000 words) long.

You should cite at least five recent

references. Please use APA formatting for
your references.
