Radium-226
Radium now has few uses, because it is so highly radioactive.

Radium-223 is sometimes used to treat prostate cancer that has

spread to the bones. Because bones contain calcium and radium
is in the same group as calcium, it can be used to target
cancerous bone cells. It gives off alpha particles that can kill the
cancerous cells.

Radium used to be used in luminous paints, for example in clock

and watch dials. Although the alpha rays could not pass through
the glass or metal of the watch casing, it is now considered to be
too hazardous to be used in this way.

Problem #1
Radium-266

radium has a half-life of 1620 years, how

many grams of radium will be left after 100
years if there are 3 grams of radium at
present.
A=s(1/2)^t/h
A=3(1/2)^100/1620
A=3(0.958)
A≈2.87g
Sodium-24

Sodium chloride is the chemical name for salt. Sodium is an electrolyte that
regulates the amount of water in your body. Sodium also plays a part in
nerve impulses and muscle contractions.
Sodium chloride is used to treat or prevent sodium loss caused by
dehydration, excessive sweating, or other causes.
Sodium chloride may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication
guide.

Problem#2
Sodium-24
sodium-24 has a half-life of 15 hours. how
much sodium-24 will remain in an 18.0g
sample of 60 hours?

A = A0 * 2 -t/h

A = 18 * 2 -60/15

A = 18 * 2-4

A = 18/ 16 = 9/8 grams

Radon-222 It is chemically inert, but radioactive. Radon
decays into radioactive polonium and alpha
particles. This emitted radiation made radon
useful in cancer therapy. Radon was used in
some hospitals to treat tumours by sealing
the gas in minute tubes, and implanting
these into the tumour, treating the disease
in situ.

Problem #3
Radon-222
The half-life period of radon-222 is 3.8 days.
After how many days will only one-
twentieth of the radon sample be left over?
