Section A: READING SKILLS 20

I. Read the passage given below. 10

(a) Have you ever failed at something so miserably that the thought of attempting to do it again was the last thing on your
mind?

(b) If your answer is yes, then you should understand that you are not a robot. Unlike robots, we human beings have
feelings, emotions, and dreams. We are all meant to grow despite our circumstances and limitations. Flourishing and
trying to make our dreams come true feels great when life goes our way. But what happens when it does not? What
happens when you fail despite all your hard work? Do you stay down and accept defeat or do you get up again? If you
tend to persevere and keep going, you have what experts call ‘grit’

Falling down or failing is one of the most agonising, embarrassing, and scary human experiences. But it is also one of
(c)
the most educational, empowering, and essential parts of living a successful and fulfilling life. Did you know that
perseverance (grit) is one of the seven qualities that has been described as the key to personal success and betterment in
society? The other six are curiosity, gratitude, optimism, self-control, social intelligence, and zest. Thomas Edison is an
example of grit for trying more than 1,000 times to invent the light bulb. If you are reading this with the lights on in
your room, you will realize the importance of his success. When asked why he kept going despite hundreds of failures,
he merely stated that they had not been failures, they were hundreds of attempts toward creating the light bulb. This
statement not only revealed his grit but also his optimism for looking at the bright side.

Grit can be learnt to help you become more successful. One of the techniques that help is mindfulness. Mindfulness is a
(d) practice that makes an individual stay at the moment by bringing awareness of his or her experience without judgement.
This practice has been used to quieten the noise of fears and doubts. Through this simple practice of mindfulness,
individuals have the ability to stop the self-sabotaging downward spiral of hopelessness, despair, and frustration.

What did you do to overcome the negative and self-sabotaging feelings of failure? Reflect on what you did, and try to
(e) use those same powerful resources to help you today.

II Read the passage given below and answer the question . 10 Marks
1. The incidence of dengue has grown dramatically around the world in recent decades. Majority of cases are asymptomatic or
mild and self-managed, and hence the actual numbers of dengue cases are under- reported or often misdiagnosed
One estimate indicates 390 million dengue virus infections per year (95% credible interval 284 –528 million), of which 96
2 million (67–136 million) manifest clinically (with any severity of disease). The number of dengue cases reported to WHO
increased over 8 folds over the last two decades
This alarming increase in case numbers is partly explained by a change in national practices to record and report dengue to the
3 Ministries of Health, and to the WHO. But it also represents government recognition of the burden, and therefore the
pertinence to report dengue disease

Before 1970, only 9 countries had experienced severe dengue epidemics. The disease is now endemic in more than 100
4 countries in the WHO regions of Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, South - East Asia and the Western Pacific,
The America, South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions are the most seriously affected, with Asia representing ~70% of
the global burden of disease.

2
In 2020, dengue continues to affect several countries, with reports of increases in the numbers of cases in Bangladesh, Brazil,
5. Cook Islands, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Mauritania, Mayotte (Fr), Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Thailand,
Timor-Leste and Yemen
6 The largest number of dengue cases ever reported globally was in 2019. All regions were affected, and dengue
transmission was recorded in Afghanistan for the first time.
7 The first dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia® (CYD-TDV) developed by Sanofi Pasteur was licensed in December 2015 and
has now been approved by regulatory authorities in ~20 countries. In November 2017, the results of an additional
analysis to retrospectively determine serostatus at the time of vaccination were released.

8 As described in the WHO position paper on the Dengvaxia vaccine (September 2018) the dengue vaccine CYD-TDV
has been shown in clinical trials to be efficacious and safe in persons who have had a previous dengue virus infection.
However, it carries an increased risk of severe dengue in those who experience their first natural dengue infection after
vaccination. For countries considering vaccination as part of their dengue control programme, pre-vaccination screening
is the recommended strategy.
