The Old Man and His Grandson: A Reflection

“Aging should not be regarded as an affliction. It is a stage in life, like all others,
that deserves to be celebrated and documented in all its natural grace and beauty”
We all age, that is a fact of life. Our lives are relentlessly moving toward age from
the minute we are born. We may live longer than others if we are diligent with our
lifestyle, if we have the correct combination of genes, or if we are simply lucky. Growing
old, like death and taxes, is something we cannot evade.
As a result, aging is an issue that we should all be concerned about. Aging is
something we should plan for regardless of where we are in our lives chronologically.
This is something that is related to the short film entitled, “The Old Man and His
Grandson.” The plot revolves upon the man's son and wife that make him eat behind
the stove because they are humiliated by their father's inability to eat without making a
mess. With a few pieces of wood, the young grandson constructs something. When the
parents ask about it, he informs them that it is a trough from which they will eat when
they grow old. They've learned their lesson and are now allowing the grandfather to eat
at the table once more.
This short story informs parents how their children will imitate their actions.
Because their parents are cruel to their elderly father, the child will follow in their
footsteps and treat them mercilessly when they are older.
Talking about aging and by analyzing the video, it made me connect to our
present discussion about Care of the Older Adult. Somehow, I learned that we should
treat people the way we want to be treated—regardless of age, the differences, and
barriers. It also made me easily digest the lessons because of the moral that the short
film gave. It is no joke to treat inhumane to older people because they are still humans,
and remember all of us will go through to that phase.
It is important to remember to be not only considerate but also polite to people
whose bodies and minds are aging, simply because of the hands of time. Ageism exists,
but being kind and showing compassion is at least one step in the right direction in a
world that is often devoid of manners.
