Q1

The diagram shows the geometrical dimensions of a crank for manually starting a diesel engine
in wheat farm. The maximum force the operater applies is F = 700 N. For the crank dimensions
shown, suggest a suitable material for shaft AB from the list of materials .Your grade will be as
follows:

a) Drawing Torque diagram (2 point).

b) Drawing Bending Moment diagram (3 points)
c) Design calculations (3 points)
d) Stating a reasonable material from the list given (2 point)
Q2: (Some equations are given below)
The figure below is a schematic drawing of a countershaft that supports two V-belt pulleys.
The shaft is rotating at 2000 revs/min. For each pulley, the belt tensions are parallel. For pulley
A, the loose belt tension is 15 percent of the tension on the tight side (i.e., T 2=0.15 T 1 ).
You are to:
a) Draw a fully labeled torque diagram for the entire shaft.
b) Draw a fully labeled bending moment diagram for the shaft.
c) Locate the most critical section on the shaft.
d) For a factor of safety of 3.0 and using any fatigue design theory, determine the minimum
preferred size diameter of the shaft. A list of some suggested materials is attached to
choose from. You may also assume that at the critical section Kf = 1.46 and Kfs = 1.22.
Apart from ka you may, for simplicity assume that all other endurance limit correction
factors are = 1.

YOU MAY REASONABLY ASSUME ANY MISSING DATA
