Q1(More information on the last page)

The crank of circular cross section shown lies in the x-z plane and clamped at A. An operating force of
150 N acts in the –y direction. The segment lengths are AB = 600, BC = 400 and CD = 100 mm.
Materials are supplied. You are required to design the crank for static application. Your grade for this
problem will come from:

a) Stating all assumptions clearly (2 marks).

b) Drawing the necessary load diagrams and showing the most critical section (4 marks)
c) Logical and NEAT presentation of your work (1 mark)
d) Necessary design calculations (3 marks)

Q2: (Some equations are given below)
The figure below is a schematic drawing of a machined power transmission shaft that supports
two V-belt pulleys with bearings at A and D. The shaft is rotating at 2000 revs/min. For each
pulley, the belt tensions are parallel. The pulley diameters for B and C are respectively 72 and
144 mm.
You are to:
a) Draw a fully labeled torque diagram for the entire shaft.
b) Draw a fully labeled bending moment diagrams for the shaft.
c) Locate the most critical section on the shaft.
d) Determine the minimum preferred shaft diameter. A list of some suggested materials is
attached to choose from. You may also assume that at the critical section Kf = 1.46 and
Kfs = 1.22. Apart from ka you may, for simplicity assume that all other endurance limit
correction factors are = 1.

YOU MAY REASONABLY ASSUME ANY MISSING DATA
