A shaft made of steel is used to drive a machine. It rotates at 1500 r.p.m. The pulleys A, B and
the bearings C, D are located as shown in the figure below. The belts tensions are also shown.
The stress concentration factors applied to bending and torsion are 1.5 and 1.2 respectively.
Using a factor of safety of 2.5, determine the diameter of the shaft if it is made using a material
which has an ultimate tensile strength of 650 MPa.

The wall bracket, shown in the figure below, has a circular cross-section and is subjected to a
pull of F = 5000 N acting in the z direction (i.e., pointing out of the paper). You are required to:
(a) Determine the size of the diameter of the bracket using:
1) Maximum Shear Stress Theory (Tresca’s Theory)
2) Maximum Distortion Energy Theory (Von Mises Theory)
(b) Comment on the results you obtained in part (a).
Choose a suitable factor of safety and a suitable material for the bracket from the sheet attached.
