VALVES FOR VACUUM SERVICE

1. INTRODUCTION.

1.1 SCOPE

This specification is applicable to valves for vacuum service from

100 kPa (1000 mbar) down to 10 Pa (0.1 mbar).
This specification shall apply in addition to the applicable MESC buying description and
the referenced external standards.

1.2 In DEP 31.38.01.12 GEN the vacuum piping classes 11140, 11150 and 13110 are not
included anymore. The reason is that :
- the Shell Global Solutions International (Shell-GSI) accepted valve designs have
been improved considerably and they are in line with updated buying descriptions
and MESC additional requirements.
- the stuffing box, spacer ring and gland requirements as well as the stem packing and
tolerances are improved as shown in MESC additional requirements SPE 77/100,
SPE 77/101, SPE77/102, SPE 77/103, SPE 77/104 and SPE 77/302.

O-ring type gaskets are considered not necessary anymore.

1.3 However, Shell-GSI still maintain the group valve MESC buying descriptions for
vacuum service (listed in section 3.1.1), because a number of Shell-GSI advised
Operating Units are still using the vacuum piping classes 11140, 11150 and 13110.
