Jar files are Java Archive files and are used to hold multiple files for java-related applications
such as browser add-ons, applets or plug-ins. A jar file can also contain a Java program. There
are two ways to install a jar file on your computer, depending on what the file contains:
program files or a program. Follow this step-by-step guide to install a jar file on your system.

Jar File that Contains Program Files

Step 1
Download the jar file onto your desktop.

Step 2
Right-click on the file and choose "Rename." Change the file extension from .jar to .zip. Click
"OK."

Step 3
Right-click on the file and choose "Unzip." Your computer will use its pre-installed
decompression or zip application to open the file. If your system does not have a
decompression application, you can download a free copy of WinZip using the link in the
resource section.

Step 4
Click "Save" to save the file to your hard drive. Click "Open" after the file has finished
downloading.

Step 5
Double-click on the file marked "Install" or "Set-up" to install the program files on your
computer. If the file does not have one of these options, open the program that the files are
intended for and it will automatically detect and install the files.

Jar File that Contains a Program

Step 1
Download the jar file onto your desktop.

Step 2
Double-click on the file. The Java Runtime program will automatically detect and open the file.
If your system does not have Java Runtime, you can download it free from Java using the link
in the resource section.

Step 3
Click "Install" when prompted. Java Runtime will install the program on your computer for you.

Step 4
Click "Open" to open the program after the installation process has been completed.
