Objectives
By the end of this session we will be able to:
 Understand the concept of research paper, term paper and seminar paper
 Differentiate these three terms: research paper, term paper and seminar
paper

Introduction
There are different types of scholarly literature, some of which require original research
(categorized as primary literature) and some that are based on other published work (secondary
literature). It is important to have a clear idea about the different types of articles that you can
publish in journals. This will help you understand the ways in which you can disseminate your
work and identify what kind of article would be suitable for your study. The types of
publications are different in different fields. Some of the possible types of scientific publications
are: Original research, review article, Clinical case study, Perspective, opinion, and commentary,
book review, etc. In this case we will give attention to three major academic writings namely:
research paper, term paper and seminar paper.

Definitions and concepts

Before we delve into the structure difference and similarity of research paper, term paper and
seminar paper, let’s first define them and look into the objectives of writing.

1. Term Paper
 A term paper is a research paper required at the end of a school semester. It tracks and
evaluates the students’ knowledge about the course. Usually a scientific report or a
discussion of an assigned topic, the term paper requires a lot of research and technical
writing expertise. This academic writing assignment must be well-written, analytical,
organized, and well-researched as this reflects your knowledge of a certain course.
 A term paper is a scientific work on a specific topic, which is provided in writing. The
purpose of the work is to teach the student to work with literature, to apply the relevant
knowledge in practice, where only one question is explored. In the course required parts:
content, introduction, main part, conclusion, list of sources.
 A term paper is an article or a “piece” that you write. Could be your opinion, observation,
argument, question, philosophy on something, two-sided debate, whatever. It’s a

requirement for the course in question, and therefore has to be started and finished within
the duration of the course, which lasts for a term.

2. Research paper
 A research paper is an expanded essay that presents your own interpretation or
evaluation or argument. When you write an essay, you use everything that you personally
know and have thought about a subject.
 A research paper analyzes a perspective or argues a point. Regardless of the type of
research paper you are writing, your finished research paper should present your own
thinking backed up by others' ideas and information.
 A research paper is a creative work performed using the correct from a scientific point of
view of the methodology, having obtained using this technique own experimental
material. Based on this material, analysis and conclusions are made about the nature of
the phenomenon being studied.
 Research paper is short for “library research paper.” Here you establish a topic, look up
what has been found on it, and present that in your own paper, referencing your sources.
