ESSAY

Sustainable Development for Labuan Bajo Tourism

Tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, and while it

is closely linked to the social, economic, and environmental well-being of many
countries, especially developing countries, foreign exchange, and a major source
of employment. The tourism industry is an important part of Indonesia’s
economy, contributing almost five per cent of its gross domestic product. The
importance of international tourism in its regions, however, varied greatly. Prior
to 2020, tourism in Indonesia was experiencing steady growth, spurred by
increasing numbers of foreign visitors. In 2021, the Indonesian Tourism and
Creative Economy Ministry had singled out five ‘super-priority’ destinations to
promote, one of which is Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara. A budget of 351.6
billion Indonesian rupiahs was allocated in 2022 to develop these destinations
further. By developing and marketing more tourist destinations to international
visitors, the Indonesian government had hoped to use this industry to further spur
economic growth. To the International Labour Organization, researchers regard
tourism as a key sector, where the national development priorities of pro-poor,
pro-growth, pro-environment and pro-jobs come together. Moving towards a
greener, climate-resilient tourism economy, therefore, is increasingly important to
ensure a sustainable development path for the country, not only over the long term
but also in the short term. In this essay, I will discuss how tourist places such as
Labuan Bajo have an important role in Indonesia and in the economy. In the first
paragraph I have written the tourism and how’s the role. Then, we will discuss the
negative impacts on some people who don’t preserve nature. Finally, we find for
alternatives to keep tourist objects sustainable.

The Indonesian Government, through its Long-Term National

Development Plan (RPJP), the Long-Term National Tourism Development Plan
(RIPPARNAS), and its tourism Mid-Term Strategic Plan (RENSTRA)
communicates a clear vision of the importance of sustainable development. These
documents emphasize the need to address people’s welfare and quality of life,
conserve natural and cultural resources, and promote international cooperation to
advance the country’s development objectives. Based on Indonesia’s green
tourism journal, now more than six decades in existence, the Republic of
Indonesia began to strategically plan for tourism development some 40 years ago.
While the early development stages were hampered during the 1970s by internal
policy barriers, currency appreciation induced by an oil boom and high costs
compared to neighbouring destinations, by 1980 Indonesia received 562,000
international visitors. Thirty years later, Indonesia welcomed 7 million
international visitors in 2010. By 2014, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative
Economy (MoTCE) would like to increase that figure, targeting 8.6 million
arrivals. As Indonesia's international and domestic tourism continues to grow, its
natural and cultural environment will experience even greater stress as it is in
some cases already threatened or endangered. Probably. For this reason, there is
an urgent need to raise awareness and practice sustainable tourism approaches
between the industry and tourists. There is a fierce global competition for tourism
dollars. Destination "winners" harness the power of tourism to support creative
economic services for low-carbon, slow-climate, environmentally friendly and
socially respected sustainable development. Those who contribute to the transition
to the characteristic "green economy".

Labuan Bajo is the capital city of West Manggarai Regency which has a
very strategic geographical location, where the position of Labuan Bajo is in the
western part of the island of Flores. Labuan Bajo, also known as the tourism city,
is the western gateway to enter the tourist charm of Flores Island. One of the
things that become the strength of the city of Labuan Bajo is the existence of the
Komodo National Park area which has been used as a world-class tourist
attraction, where Labuan Bajo is the entry point to get to the tourist area. In
addition to having marine tourism potential, there is also quite a lot of land
tourism, including natural caves with their own peculiarities, springs and
waterfalls which are located not far from the Labuan Bajo area. However, the
beauty of it all will be disturbed if there are irresponsible parties. The existence of
Waste Management on Tourism Sustainability in Labuan Bajo has a negative
impact. As a growing new leading destination, the city of Labuan Bajo is also
inseparable from the same problems as other tourism cities, such as social,
economic, and environmental problems, which are the impact of tourism
development. The preliminary survey carried out in Labuan Bajo City in April
2019 suggests that there is nevertheless much stuff that wants to be addressed,
especially the ones associated with sustainability in lots of aspects, and waste is
certainly considered one among them. Garbage continues to be disposed of
carelessly with the aid of using citizens and enterprise actors domiciled in
vacationer sites` vicinity. Still, the fast improvement of tourism infrastructure has
additionally created a brand-new extent of waste, consisting of in markets and
buying centres. For the status of tourism sustainability to be improved, the
Regional Government and stakeholders need to intervene in the dominant
variables affecting sustainability based on the several aspects, ecological Aspects:
(1) carrying capacity of tourist areas, (2) Amount of waste piles and (3) Pollution
index (water, air, and soil), in this context water pollution, although it cannot be
ascertained that it is due to tourism activities. Economic Aspects: (1)
Competitiveness against other regions (2) Number of tourist visits (3) Increasing
employment opportunities, (4) Contribution of tourism to per capita income, (5)
price stability and (6) contribution of revenue from the tourism sector against
PAD.

To keep the tourist objects sustainable, Labuan Bajo's Flores Authority

Body (BPOLBF) is in the process of developing three sustainable tourism
programs. Director of BPOLBF Shana Fatina pointed out that the focus will be on
the three main programs as the future of tourism development in the area. Those
programs are Flores, Lembata, Alor, Bima (Floratama) tourism market, the
Floratama Academy, and the preparation of the Floratama Travel Pass. The goals
of SDGs are not made for no reason; The purpose is to create a set of universal
goals that address the world’s environmental severe, political, and economic
concerns. The tourism sector’s sustainability is one of the goals. Tourism objects
such as the beautiful nature cannot be remade. Humanity’s selfishness cannot
destroy the nature. The policies made by the government are designed to achieve
the goal of taking care of the Labuan Bajo’s from damage as constructing
sustainable tourism development. As a result, we must appreciate that by
complying with the regulation.
