Air-conditioning Systems

(Preliminary Planning Design Method)

Air-conditioning Standards
 The temperature and humidity of the air to be used for comfortable cooling shall be maintained
at 20 – 24 degrees Celsius (68-74 degree Fahrenheit) effective temperature at an air movement
of 4.57 to 7.60 mpm within the living zone

Mechanical Equipment Room (MER) Design Requirement

(Centralized Mechanical Equipment Rooms)

Cooling Tower 0.25 2.13 – 4.93
Packaged (Rooftop) 1 1.52 – 3.03
Split Units 1.0 – 3.0 2.44 – 2.74
1
The required floor area is a percentage of the gross building area served (parking is excluded). Use the upper end range for
small buildings and large buildings with a great deal of mechanical equipement requirements such as hospitals and laboratories
2
Use the lower end of the range in ceiling height for smaller buildings
3
Since cooling towers and package units are usually not roofed areas over their entire height, values given in the table are
actual heights of these equipment, not ceiling heights
4
The area refers to fan coil units.
