The line graph illustrates the size of population, birth and death rate of England and
Wales from 1700 to 2000. Overall, it is clear that the population showed an
upward trend, meanwhile death and birth rate showed a fluctuating trend.
From 1700 to 1950, both the death and birth rate had a similar pattern. The birth rate
increased from 30 to 40 per 1000 people during the first 50-year period, while the death
rate climbed up from 27 to 37 per 1000 people. Both remained consistent for 50 years.
After that, both of the rates experienced a deep decline then hit the low of about 20 per
thousand people by 1950. It leveled off again between 1850 and 1900. The death rate
maintained the same level for the next 50 years, but the birth rate sharply increased
from 22 to about 34 per 1000 people.
