net migration in the United Kingdom over the period of 10 years starting from 1999.

Overall, it is evident that both immigration and immigration rates saw an upward
trajectories over the period shown, but the figures for immigration were always
significantly higher. It is also noticeable that net migration peaked in 2004 and 2007.

The numbers of people came to the UK was over 450,000 people in 1999, with
emigrant’s numbers trailing behind at under 300,000 people. Besides, the data of net
migration was around 160,000 people which remained approximately at similar level until
2003. From 1999 to 2004, a slightly increase was seen to under 600,000 people in the
immigration rate. There was a smaller rise in emigration, at around 400,000 people. In
2004, the figure for net migration peaked at almost 250,000.

After 2004, the immigrant rate still remained high, at approximately 600,000 people,
however, the number of emmigrant fluctuated to 400,000 people. The number of people
emigrating fell suddenly by roughly 100,000 people before peaking at over 400,000
people in 2008. In addition, the net migrating rose to more than 200,000 people then
falling back to 160,000 people in 2008.
