STATIC TIMING

KV 38/50 STATIC TIMING OVERVIEW

STATIC TIMING
GENERAL INFORMATION
Injection timing is the relative
measurement of the distance
remaining between the injector
plunger and the injector cup
when the piston is
5.16mm(0.2032”) or 19
degrees before top dead centre
(TDC) on the compression
stroke

NOTE:~ Injection timing is

expressed by the amount of
push rod travel remaining
STATIC TIMING

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Injection timing code
appears on the engine dataplate.
Codes are alphabetic that relate
to a numerical specification.
Specifications can be found in
the CONTROL PARTS LIST
(CPL) Manual.
STATIC TIMING

GENERAL INFORMATION
ADVANCED timing (1) means
that the fuel is injected
earlier into the cylinder
during the compression
stroke.
RETARDED timing (2) means
the fuel injection occurs
closer to top dead centre in
the cylinder
STATIC TIMING
GENERAL INFORMATION
The amount of push rod
travel determines the time of
fuel injection in relation to the
piston position.
A low numerical value of
pushrod travel remaining,
indicates a greater degree of
advanced (1) or fast timing.
A high numerical value of
pushrod travel remaining
indicates a greater degree of
retarded (2) or slow timing.

STATIC TIMING
GENERAL INFORMATION
Injection timing changes are
accomplished by advancing or
retarding the cam follower
action in relation to the piston
position.
This is accomplished by
changing the orientation of the
camshaft lobe to the cam
follower using different
camshaft gear keys.
NOTE:~ Gear train timing (index
mark alignment) always
remains the same.
STATIC TIMING
GENERAL INFORMATION
If checking or setting injection
timing, it is recommended to
use a modified testing gear, a
gear that has been machined
to provide a slip fit on the
camshaft.
Offset keys can be identified
by measuring the amount of
offset and referring to the
table at the end of this
section, or in the T&R
manuals.
NOTE:~ Each 0.025mm(0.001”)
of offset will cause approx.
0.0127mm (0.0005”) change
in pushrod travel.

SETTING THE CLOCKS

(REAR VIEW SHOWN)
Set the clocks with the Piston
plunger inserted into the
Injector bore, tighten screws to
secure in place, ensure that the
Cam plunger is parallel with the
Piston Plunger.

Piston Plunger (10) Cam Plunger (10)

STATIC TIMING
Cam Clock Piston Clock
HOW TO MEASURE
Establish TDC by slowly
rotating the crankshaft in
normal direction of rotation
whilst observing the piston
plunger(10). The plunger will
move upward, stop, then
begin to move downward. The
stop point of the plunger is
TDC.

The engine must be on it’s

compression stroke, this is
confirmed by the two plungers
moving in an upward direction
as the piston nears TDC, if
one plunger is on the way up
and the other down, the
engine is out by 360°.
STATIC TIMING

HOW TO MEASURE
Zero the piston clock, this will
indicate the highest point
(TDC) which the piston will
travel on the upward stroke.
(Note the clock is set with the
outer needle on the “0” and the
inner clock on the “5”, this
ensures there is enough travel
throughout the range of the
clock to avoid damage).
STATIC TIMING
HOW TO MEASURE
Rotate the engine 90° in the
same direction of rotation,
(clockwise as viewed from
the front).
Adjust the Cam clock with
the outer needle on the “0”
and the inner clock on the
“5”, this will be our reference
point when counting the
distance the push rod has to
travel when the piston is at
0.2032” BTDC.
STATIC TIMING
HOW TO MEASURE
Bar the engine in an anti-
clockwise position,
keeping an eye on the
Piston clock until the
needle reaches TDC,
continue barring in an
anti-clockwise position
until the needle rotates
approx. 0.250” BTDC, by
doing this we will be able
to eliminate all backlash
with in the front gear train.
STATIC TIMING
HOW TO MEASURE
Slowly rotate the engine in
normal direction of rotation
until the needle shows
0.2032” BTDC.
STATIC TIMING
HOW TO MEASURE
Once the needle on the
piston clock is at 0.2032”
BTDC, raise the needle on
the Cam clock to the
position (set in slide 12),
and slowly release,
counting the revolutions,
until the needle comes to
rest . This will be the
remaining push rod travel
before the piston reaches
TDC.
STATIC TIMING
HOW TO MEASURE
Should the measurement
not be correct according to
the information on the data
plate (Timing code), then
the following slides will
detail how to obtain the
correct key and in which
direction it is to be fitted.
STATIC TIMING
HOW TO ADJUST
In the following example we have a KV38 with a static timing code of AJ, after
checking the CPL manual, the code equates to 0.126”, the static timing
reading was found to be 0.137”, 0.011” larger than the data plate
specification.
With this information we will be able to determine the key in order to correct the
static timing for this particular model.

and insert the key in the Opposite direction to camshaft rotation.
