Getting to Know Your Articles: A Pre-Writing Activity

Thesis: There is a good and a bad side to both, old-fashioned and modern-based, management
and leadership styles.

Article: Alvesson M., & Spicer, A. (2012). Critical leadership studies: The case for critical
performativity. Human Relations, 65(3), 367–390.

Differences:

1. The Authors mainly focus on the consequences of bad management for some of the
paragraphs on the text.
2. This article is a lot more professional-looking and significantly longer.
3. It goes around the old-fashioned leadership topic for a couple of sentences.

Article: Schwartz, Tony, and Emily Pines. “Great Leaders are Thoughtful and Deliberate, Not
Impulsive and Reactive.” Harvard Business Review, 17 Apr. 2019.

Differences:

1. This article is mainly focused around the self-analyzing side of management/leadership.

2. The article is short and straight to the point, short and sweet like it should.
3. This article is more modern-based and it has more obvious real life applications.

Similarities:

1. Talking about different types of managers and leaders.

2. Giving at least 2 specific examples of decisions a bad manager/leader would make.
3. They both get their point across and any confusing situations are dealt with within the
texts.
