CALA COMPONENT

LEARNING AREA: CHEMISTRY

LEVEL: FORM 4

CALA TYPE: PRACTICAL, PEN AND PAPER

TOPIC: CLASSIFICATION AND NOMENCLATURE OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

SUBTOPIC: HYDROCARBONS AND ALCOHOLS

CALA TITLE:

Demonstrating the arrangement of atoms in organic compounds using hand-made models

COMPETENCES:

Demonstration, Model Creation

DIMENSIONS TO BE ACHIEVED

Researching, Hand-crafting

OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED

-capitalize on learners’ ability to hand-craft textbook diagrams into tangible models

-help learners understand the bonding and functional groups in hydrocarbons from models

-teach learners to have better understanding of displayed formulae of organic molecules

BACKGROUND

Organic molecules have many various functions because of the many different arrangements
of atoms and different functional groups. Pupils are expected to understand and be able to
draw the displayed structures of these different organic molecules. In this CALA the pupil is
tasked with creating hand-made models to demonstrate arrangement of atoms in alkanes,
alkenes and alcohols.

This CALA consists of Part A only.

ACTIVITIES

PART A

a) Research on and draw the displayed structures of the following hydrocarbons;

(i) Ethane [3]
(ii) Propane [3]
(iii) Propene [3]
(iv) Ethanol [3]

b) Create a hand-made model representing an alkane, alkene and an alcohol using simple
and locally-available material [18]

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

The teacher will assess;

-the drawing of displayed structures of stated hydrocarbons

-the accurate depiction and clarity of the handmade models

-choice of material used.

CALA tips – use simple material that is easy to work with.
