II. Content
According to Ms. Lorie Mae R. Lagula who works as a tourist/tour guide in Museo Sorsogon. In the year
1894 Sorsogon was part of the Albay Province. At the same year of October 17, holding the virtue vested
by Royalty Crane to the Spanish Government there was decree and scripture that Sorsogon will become
an independent province from Albay and will have its own seat of town and government. In addition to
this, Sorsogon have its old name that was originally spelled as “SOLSOGON”. Solsogon is an Bikol word
meaning “to trace” derived from the Bikol root word “SOLSOG” which means “going against the
current”. Given that Sorsogon became an independence province from Albay, Sorsogon have its monthly
celebration called KASANGGAYAHAN FESTIVAL. Ms. Lorie said that the main reason why this
province have this festival is to celebrate the funding anniversary of Sorsogon as an independent province
or separate town from Albay. The very first Kasanggayahan Festival was held in October 1974, during
the administration of Gov. Juan G. Frivaldo, which was Sorsogon’s 80th foundation anniversary as a
province separate from the Province of Albay. The year 1974 was also very historic for Sorsogon
province because this is the year when the Sorsogon Amphitheater was built in preparation for the grand
night of Kasanggayahan Festival. This very first amphitheater in Sorsogon is located between the
campuses of the Sorsogon National High School and what is now the Sorsogon State College/ Sorsogon
State University Official trade fair, exhibits and cultural performances of the Kasanggayahan Festival are
all done here in Sorsogon Amphitheater. Kasanggayahan is an old Bikol word, the meaning of which can
be gleaned from the short verse composed by Rev. Fr. Jose O. Ofrasio: “when the fields are green and the
grains are golden; when the machines works well and all business prosper; when the birds in the sky chirp
freely, and men on earth are peacefully happy; in Bikol, it is KASANGGAYAHAN, meaning a life of
prosperity. Therefore, The Philippine Congress passed a law declaring that October 17 of each year as a
special holiday for the entire province. Kasanggayahan Festival is the October monthly annual festival in
the province of Sorsogon where a lot of activities are being celebrated in this event. The festival is
highlighted by the Pantomina sa Tinampo, or dancing the Pantomina in the streets. According to Ms.
Lorie Mae, Pantomina came from the Spanish word “PANTOMIME” which mean gesture, a gesture that
tell about courting. According to her Pantomina is a pre-colonial Bicol Dance in all Bicol Region, before
the Spaniards came in the province. During the pre-colonial period Pantomina dance was only for the
newly wed that was being led by the spiritual leader in the community, to show blessing for the newly
wed. Hence, during the pre-colonial era it is called as “SINALAMPATI or SAYAW NG KALAPATI”
because it sometimes referred as “dance of the doves” also the dance symbolizes movement of two doves
in courtship. During this era sinalamapati symbolizes as a “unity of love” and “blessing for the newly
wed”. Pantomina in the street or sometimes called as “PANTOMINA SA TINAMPO” was choregraphed
by Sir Jaime Rullia that was a head teacher of arts and culture in Sorsogon National High School. It is
called pantomina in the street or pantomina sa tinampo because in the year 1994 Pantomina included as
an activity in the street. At the year 1994 pantomina become as a festive dance during Kasanggayahan
Festival in Sorsogon province. Moreover, this dance also used as monetary dance or sometimes called as
prosperity dance every wedding. In the year October 31, 2019 during the Kasanggyahan Festival the
traditional courtship dance was joined by a total of 7,127 Sorsogon residents. The traditional courtship
dance performed in the street from Fatima Church to Bulwagan and Rompeolas Baywalk. Swapnil
Dangarikar of India, official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, witnessed the historic
performance during the Kasanggayahan Festival and he handed the award to Governor Francis “Chiz”
Escudero.
