PIPESIM 2022.1 Release notes Page 1

Introduction
The PIPESIM* steady-state multiphase flow simulator is Schlumberger’s flagship well and network
modeling software for steady-state multiphase flow simulation. Together with the OLGA* dynamic
multiphase flow simulator, Schlumberger provides a complete software solution for design and
optimization of production systems.

These notes accompany the release of PIPESIM 2022.1 from Schlumberger. The notes describe
changes in PIPESIM 2022.1 relative to PIPESIM 2021.1. This document should be read by all
users of the program. The complete program documentation consists of the PIPESIM Help, the
release notes, and the installation guides.

The Schlumberger Software Support Hub provides useful information about the product, and a
knowledge base.

Please contact Schlumberger if problems or missing functionality are encountered when using
PIPESIM or any of the related tools included in the PIPESIM software package.

Enhancements in PIPESIM 2022.1

• New PVT fluid package: Symmetry
• Support for ESP Permanent Magnet Motor
• Expose ESP motor performance parameters
• Gas lift diagnostics plot added to P/T and NODAL Analysis tasks
• Upgrade to Python 3.9 and support additional variables under Python Toolkit
• Internal file format upgrade

New PVT fluid package: Symmetry

PIPESIM 2022.1 includes Symmetry as an additional PVT characterization package under
compositional fluid modeling options.

With Symmetry, you can define composition components by using the standard components list or
add user-defined components by defining the fluid basic properties, such as molecular weight,
boiling point and so on.

In addition, like the other existing fluid packages in PIPESIM, you can interactively perform flash
calculation under certain pressure and temperature conditions.

The Symmetry PVT package is a powerful fluid engine that offers, in addition to the basic fluid
characterization capabilities, the ability to model solid formation risks of hydrate, wax, and
asphaltene. It also offers the ability to display a solid CO2 line on the phase diagram.

Support for ESP Permanent Magnet Motor

In PIPESIM 2022.1, you can model the installation of Permanent Magnet Motor (PMM) in ESP
systems.

The overall ESP system, including operating speed, power, head, and efficiency is adjusted based
on the number of poles in the PMM, which allows for high operating frequencies more than 420 hz.

Expose ESP motor performance parameters

When you enable the Surface power correction under the ESP Calculation options tab and add
a motor and a cable to the model, various motor variables are exposed as part of the ESP node
and profile results. This includes motor load, efficiency, current, voltage, power factor, and cable
voltage drop.

Gas lift diagnostics plot added to P/T and NODAL Analysis tasks
If you model a well with a gas lift injection valve system and enable multi-pointing option, the gas lift
diagnostics plot is now added to the P/T and NODA Analysis tasks. Previously, this plot was only
available under the gas lift diagnostics task.

Upgrade to Python 3.9 and support additional variables under Python

Toolkit
In this release, the conda environment has been upgraded to Python 3.9.13. In addition, more
calculation variables are now supported in the Python Toolkit. This includes:

• Pipe coating details

• Override corrosion options in flowlines
• Relative permeability table
• Emulsion viscosity table
• Dead oil viscosity table
• System variable - SPHERE_TIME_IN_PIPELINE
• System variables - Total moving/static liquid volume
• Profile variables - SEVERE_SLUGGING_INDICATOR

Internal file format upgrade

PIPESIM file format was upgraded. Users can experience some performance degradation opening
pips files saved in previous versions. Once the model is saved in version 2022.1 the performance
will be restored.

Fixed issues and minor enhancements in PIPESIM 2022.1

PIPESIM 2022.1 includes several bug fixes and improvements. Some of them are listed below.

• You now cannot select water as production stream for a 2-phase separator.

• Performance is now improved when opening the well editor for compositional fluid.

• An issue in displaying JT coefficient along flow lines has been fixed.

• Permeability effect when injecting water in the gas reservoir has been fixed.

• You can now perform ESP design for a well with 10 or more completions.

• An issue related to GIS that causes the model UI to freeze has been fixed.

• A validation error has been added to handle junctions with long character names with more
than 120 characters.

• An issue related to the Heat transfer value when importing a well model into a network has
been fixed.

• Errors in the PIPESIM Help have been corrected for the Standing z factor correlation, and a
statement has been added indicating if the deviation from vertical is equal to or higher than
75 degrees, then the skin factor is 0.
