FUNDUMENTALS OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION AND INTELLIGENCE

 INTELLIGENCE - the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying

situations. : the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to
think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests)

 INFORMATION - knowledge obtained from investigation, study, or instruction

A. TECHNICAL INFORMATION – This are informative documents that is
according to a strict interpretation of facts, laws and rules but may not be relevant
or important in a particular situation
B. LEGAL INFORMATION – explains the law and legal system in general terms.
The information is not tailored to a specific case. Also means general and factual
information about the law and the legal process. Legal information is different
from technical information, which involve giving guidance regarding an
individual rights and obligations in light of his or her particular facts and
circumstances. Legal information is neutral.

 WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN INTELLIGENCE AND

INFORMATION - Information is particular data that originates from a single
source. It is occasionally perplexing, frequently conflicting, and complex. Intelligence
is another possibility, depending on the source. Combining this knowledge to produce
insights—a concept that is greater than the sum of its parts—is the essence of
intelligence.

B. SECONDARY
 ARE THERE LEGAL RESTRICTION IN GATHERING INFORMATION?
OR POLICE INVESTIGATOR CAN FREELY GATHER ANY
INFORMATION THEY NEED IN THE PROGRESS OF INVESTIGATION?

 YES, there are restriction in gathering information especially when it comes to

personal information you have limits and boundaries in gathering info. You could be
held liable for a violation of what is known as "intrusion upon seclusion" if you
physically enter a private area, photograph or record people engaged in private
activities in settings they reasonably expect to be private, or intrude into a person's
privacy in any other way (by, for example, opening a person's mail). If the method
you choose satisfies the four basic requirements for an intrusion claim, the actual data
acquisition in the context of newsgathering can be considered an incursion.

 Without probable cause, police cannot start an inquiry into a particular person. When
the police are not allowed to check into somebody, a private investigator can.
However, if a private eye acquires information illegally, that information will not be
allowed into a courtroom and could jeopardize the entire investigation.

 HOW DOES INTELLIGENCE AID IN THE INVESTIGATION

PROCEDURE?
 By assisting to target existing resources and finding information gaps to sharpen the
investigation's focus, intelligence analysis supports investigations. Additionally, it
helps to eliminate effort duplication and detours into irrelevant directions. However,
intelligence reports are typically delivered to decision-makers to aid in directing
subsequent actions. By examining crime trends within the jurisdiction and any
migrant activities moving toward the jurisdiction, a well-developed intelligence
function in law enforcement will aid in directing investigative work.
