I. Objectives
At the end of discussion, students are expected to:
1. Understand how free verse is written
2. Describe the message of free verse
3. Write/edit a free verse
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Understanding free verse
References: Google.com, World Literature Book
Materials: PowerPoint Presentation
III. Procedures
1. Students are asked to answer the motive question: how can you use your past in
defining your future?
2. A selection given. The students will convey what is the message of the selection.
3. The free verse was discussed, the students are asked to say something how free verse
is written.
4. Students are able to edit/identify lyrical devices from free verse.
IV. Enrichment activity
Identify the lyrical device in the following excerpts
1. Better than a thousand hollow words
Is one word that brings peace.
Better than a thousand hollow verses
Is one verse that brings peace.
Better than a hundred hollow lines
Is one line of the law, bringing peace.
Sahassavagga "The Thousands" (verses 100-115)

2. Heedfulness is the path to the Deathless.


Heedlessness is the path to death. The heedful die not.
The heedless are as if dead already.
Appamadavagga "Mindfulness" (verses 21-32)

Make a free verse about family ,life, friendship and love
VI. Assignment

Decipher the message of the excerpt –The Epic from Ramayana and make your own free
verse out from it .

Sita stared at Ram’s face. His face reflected royalty, but not the love for his distant wife. His
voice had dignity but no love.

She was yearning for her husband, but found a king only.

That was the moment! ‘Hey King! I think I should not depart now. Please escort me out’, bowed
Sita to Ram.

‘But, you are the queen of this kingdom.’

‘I was your wife before being the queen’

Sita raised her head to call her Mother Earth and receive her. The ground opened and Sita
stepped beneath the surface of the earth, never to return back.
